The original v2.2 firmware has been posted on rapidshare:

Some regard this as the best fw and I have been bowled over by the colours and analog sound with 2.2, today. It preserves 4:2:2 also, useful for Lumagen owners.
I had gone from 2.0 to 2.4 to 2.0 then to 2.2 in the space of 24 hrs, just trying out different fw's . I burnt 2.2 from the above link with Nero8 and installed on my HD-A1 successfully, coming from v2.0.
Therefore, it is possible to revert to 2.2 from later versions eg. v2.3.
With the a1 you CAN revert to older firmware.
i give the reference to the link above so anyone who wishes can revert to 2.2 . or if you still have the 2.2 image on disc already, simply pop the disc in and revert if you want to. That's exactly what I did when I went from 2.4 to 2.0. It has been stated that reverting to older fw is not possible. I have proved that it is possible with the HD-A1 and I am not the first, judging from posts over on avsforums.
