From collecting food stamps as a 16 year old Ukrainian immigrant to a multi-billionaire.

    Good job!

And just harvesting all the user data from it.

    Much more powerful than ads.

Also I expect to see any photos shared are public domain.

We can use them for all our own evil ends...etcetc

"The deal to buy it includes $4bn in cash and approximately $12bn-worth of Facebook shares,"

where do they get these $12bn worth of FB shares to give away from?

It's fantasy economics, as also practiced by owners of Premiere League football clubs

Yep, mine ran out some months back. They give you one year free and then you pay for it. £1.80 or so for 3 years. Not even worth thinking about considering how much I use WhatsApp!

every year i have whatsapp for free just change the number to a payg one :)
but think fb buying whatsapp i will not use whatsapp now, first they had personal info etc via fb and now our numbers etc, its a lot worse than ads being placed

and on other news Rakuten owner of play.com/kobo have bought Viber for $900million

So you are OK with whatsapp taking liberties with the entire contents of your phonebook and the gaping great security and privacy holes but are not happy with Facebook doing the same?

    PS

Just because it's free to you does not mean the owners are not making a lot of money out of the information you willingly give to them on a daily basis

this must be my 5th or 6th year with whatsapp (based on how long I've had my phone) and I haven't had to pay anything, I download from the android store. I've just checked my app and it says Lifetime next to the expiration date :D

Have never liked the app, gave it a few chances on different phones, got rid as was fed up with constant messages from vague acquaintances who send regular crap just because it's free.

You can block contacts within the settings.

I don't get how FB will make money from this at all but maybe I'm being naive.

Yep but it still is a tool for frivolity and I can't be doing with the whole cycle of receiving nonsense then blocking again and again

Great for IMers and BBMers, but not for me, and as I have unlimited everything on 4G with EE, I have no need for it. Viber is more attractive.

I think FB just want the IP and customer base but I don't quite see how the 19bn valuation tallies with the reality of WhatsApp assets and revenue.

Can anyone quickly explain why WhatsApp is any different or better than Viber?

Not being a Viber advertisement or anything, I just have never used WhatsApp but have always found Viber excellent for texts and calls so never tried alternatives.

Used whatsapp for the first year then they started insisting on payment ..no service for a week then another month of use. so on and so on...
Then i discovered cubie which my "smallish" family circle all adopted and it gets better with each update.

I heard it on the radio yesterday and immediately went to my phone and deleted the app - I hate Facebook , everyone has sold their identities

I've never used Viber but years ago a few friends raved about it and told me to download it. As I had unlimited calls and texts, I couldn't see the appeal. However at the time, I didn't have access to either wifi or internet at work and when they installed wifi a couple of years ago, everyone jumped on Whatsapp so we can now send texts/pics etc. I guess it's like Facebook vs Myspace vs Bebo. It just comes down to what is fashionable at the time and everyone runs with it.

Well as I said I've never used WhatsApp, but from the description it sounds like the same thing as Viber except Viber is free.

I can call, send texts, pictures etc. I think they may have added video calls too but I already had Tango for that.

I have (as good as) unlimited calls and texts too, but I use Viber to text and call internationally. I live near the border between Ireland and N Ireland, so I have numerous contacts on both country codes. Plus my best friend lives in Canada.
