    ive just got a usb external hd,and i want to use it for my desktop running xphome,also my lappie running win98se.
    when i connect to desktop its ok
    when i connect to lappie i need to format it,if i do will it still work with my desktop?
    i want to transfer data between them.

    Win98 does not support the NTFS so format it FAT32 using Win98 and both should read it. Weird that this should show up on a USB2 device.
