Looking to buy an external hard drive for my Dell 9300 laptop. Do youse reckon this is good value:...?

This is probobly a stupid question, but how does an external hard drive actually work when connected to a laptop......? for example how would it work with windows media player - if i had a song saved on the external hard drive but not on the main hard drive, would it appear as normal in windows media player etc.....

That is good value.....and with Maxtor being run by Seagate now :D you my even get 5 year warranty, U never no!

I got a 3.5 external and fitted my own new ide HDD in with the 5 year warranty which worked out a little more but if the drive fails out it comes, new drive in and we all march on....:smashin:

The external HDD appears just like a CD or flash drive with data on it or when browsing the root of the C: drive. You can even set WMP to add the files from the external drive to the libary so you can browse and listen to the songs without manually looking for them.

If your using Windows XP make sure the drive is formatted in NTFS and not FAT32

EDIT

Just thought I'd warn you that when you format the HDD you will lose a certain amount of storage capacity

The higher the gig the more you lose

I lost 7Gb or 4% on my 160Gb HDD

Bloody swizz yet the manufacturers can get away with it
