I use an external DVD writer and pull out the firewire lead a lot with them on.

    No problems here.

I just turn my hard disk on and off when required. I don't bother with the safely remove hardware business. It appears in "my computer" and disappears when turned off.

It's best to remove a HDD safely - horrible things can happen if you're half way through a write to it

Thanks everybody I think the correct way is if you pull the firewire cable outwhile running you need to to remove safety hardwear correctly as pointed out by Werner .

Windows uses lazy write caching to hard disks, there is no way of knowing if those caches are flushed without doing 'safely remove hardware'. Mass storage devices are the only ones where you need to do this (hdd and memory sticks/thumb drives).

I did manage to corrupt my memory stick once by pulling it out a good couple of minutes after I'd finished writing to it.

Shutting down the machine will also cause it to flush the caches so you don't need to 'safely remove hardware' before a shut down (as long as you turn off the PC before turning off the external drive)
