I have a spare external USB 2 case from a DVD recorder which I have now installed in my HTPC.

Can I install an IDE hardrive inside the external case and plug into my HTPC via the USB cable?

My operating system is windows Xp, will it recognise the hard drive?

The idea is for a cheap back up system for my growing cd rips.

Yep, shouldn't be a problem - XP sould recognise the HDD, probably as a "mass storage device".

Yes it will, I've done the same.
One problem I have is that if I share the drive it only keeps that share whilst the computer is switched on. Every time I switch the computer on I need to share it out again - does anyone know how to get around this ?

Bit off track, but i have a Usb2 - IDE adapter arriving today from ebuyer. has its own power supply etc.....

Just wondering if there is anything i need to do within XP, or will it just automatically recognise the old 27gb hardrive i'm going to use in it?

    Many thanks

I reckon XP will just pick it up without you doing anything

The adaptor works a treat and is very fast over USB2!

Highly recommended as it is possible to turn any internal hdd dvd drive etc into an external jobbie.

cheers john for your help, XP picked it up fine once i had made it into a master rather than slave drive.

Do you have a link to that item on ebuyer as it sounds like it's worth investigating ?

Link works fine thanks - I think I'll buy one of those so I can make use of all my old 6, 10 and 20 GB drives that are lying around doing nothing !
