I’m planning to put my CD collection into iTunes on my iMac.

Will any old USB CD drive do or should I splash out for an Apple one?

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks.

Any usb cd/dvd/blu-ray drive will work. LG ones are normally quite cheap and reliable I find.

I use XLD to rip my CDs (when I can find the time) using lossless FLAC as the file format. The program is pretty smart, and is worth checking out before you commit to using iTunes. XLD compares rips with a known database and can highlight any transfer errors, especially if you pick a supported drive, or one with known characteristics. As for drives, yes any available USB drive should do the trick, but do get a decent make.
