New line have announced that the Extended Edition will be out for Christmas and that in June they'll announced what the toy is that accompanies the delux set.

I guess the release date will be sometime in Novmber as usual. It was never an option to release it any earlier. Weta didn't finish the FX until April then they have to get the cast and crew together to record commentaries.

The only reason the theatrical version is early is because they decided not to have a preview of the extended edition on the theatrical DVD (because it wasn't finished) and there was no sneak preview of film 4.

The mega trilogy boxset is rumoured to be out possibly in 2006 in HD-DVD or BluRay DVD, when Peter Jackson has got King Kong out of the way.

I have heard/read that there will be a lot more extra footage in the ROTK:EE than the previous two (maybe even an hours worth (I hope). When watching the cinema release it certainly felt like a lot was missing. Hard though to tell what was never meant to be included from the books, and what had to be cut for time constraints...

I know it will definitely include the end of Saruman (cut from TTT) as well as Gandalf's confrontation with the Nazgul King; the "mouth of Sauron" at the black gate; and lots more hopefully!!

It's 4 hours 10 minutes. 50 minutes of new footage.

If one is familiar with the book there are several lines in the cinema version of ROTK which very obviously refer to scenes that aren't actually in the film.

Heaven only knows what people who hadn't tread the book thought Frodo was talking about when he mentioned the "Wheel Of Fire", for example. And, in isolation, Denethor's line about the White Tower not being blind didn't make much sense either....

the extended ROTK could almost play out like a completely different movie with 50 extra minutes in there. Personally I can't wait, after caning the extended versions of the other 2 films before seeing ROTK it felt like there were big slabs missing, and 50 extra minutes backs that up. I can't even remember the theatrical versions of the 1st 2 films now.

It's going to mean it's a Sunday afternoon movie for me though, I doubt I'd ever get the time to watch it any other day of the week, and I'm really not into breaking these things down into smaller chunks and breaking the flow of the storytelling.

yeah, i like to keep the continuity of a film going and hate even stopping it for a minute for the loo, it ruins any tensions or atmosphere that has built up!

I'm hoping to have a LOTR marathon day when the xtended editions released, over ten hours of lord of the rings! will be great!

Heres an idea. My better half has always bought the standard edition. Im waiting for the EE, so best of both worlds. It helps if your partner is a LOTR fan...but im sure a little convincing wouldnt go a stray :)

Just a quick question, I have ordered it from dvdsoon with 29 dollars of store credit from a cancelled order. If it gets cheaper will I get credited with the whole amount not just the amount after the $29?

I'm not sure I understand your question, what do you mean the amount after the $29?

Regardless, DVD Soon won't credit you with anything. If it gets cheaper you can cancel the previous order and reorder at the lower price.

I had $29 in store credit because of a cancelled order so it cost

    43.98 - 29 = 14.98

If I cancelled and re ordered I would get 43.98 back wouldn't I?

The Mouth of Sauron scene was definately film. It was played by Aussie Mega star Bruce Spence of Mad Max fame!

The HD "rumour" came from the mouth of Peter Jackson - he stated at the Oscars (one of the parties afterwards) that once he had finished King Kong he was going to turn his attention to HD versions of LOTR - I started a thread about it a few weeks ago if you want to see the exact quote... Not sure where the "BluRay" bit ame from though, I agree that we wont be seeing that for a long time...
