Earlier this afternoon, a trial of the extended Freeview EPG started in the London area.

One of my boxes (a Pace 210) is happily displaying information for later this evening and into tomorrow (yay!).

My other box (a Netgem) still only displays the Now/Next details, I have a feeling this is down to interface design as much as anything.

Maybe other Freeview users in the London area would care to comment on whether their box is handling the extra data ok or not.

If you're using an old box then the chances of this displaying the extra information is slim.

Some of the newer boxes can handle it, others need updated firmware.

If you're using an older box then there probably won't be any further updates for it. Your best bet would be to check with Nokia and see what they say,

Is there any indication when the full EPG will be going live?

    Not that I've seen.
Hopefully the fact that the trial has been extended to London, may mean that they want to see how things run before a national rollout.

As to what the possible timetable for this may be, we're going to have to wait and see.

It's annoying, especially for any owners of Freeview recorders (Pace Twin, Humax etc) as without the 7 day EPG the recording facilities become a lot less user friendly.

I beleive the only boxes/tv's that currently have the software to receive the 7 day EPG are:

    Humax F2 Fox 1 STB
    Pace PVR (the twin)
    Pace DTVA
    Sony VTX D800U
Sony iDTVs (integrated digital TV sets)
and maybe the Humax hard disk model.

I beleive there are other boxes that can be upgraded to get it. In fact I have a twin and I am in London but I am only getting the extended EPG on a couple of channels (so far) have only just turned it on. The London 7 day EPG test last year was actually giving me more, and quicker than this test.

Its begining to fill up on BBC1 & 2 & ITV2 but just now and next still on some channels. Nothing yet beyond lunch time tomorrow. The Radio Times is still a lot quicker than this.

Out of interest, does it cache the information?

If you bring up the guide, let it populate, select a channel to watch and then bring up the guide again, is it any faster? Or does it just go through the *slow* repopulation process all over again?

    Hi Ben

Me too; Pace Twin; in East London; and its slow; still it does work and it is a lot better than now & next and most people are not even getting this yet. Lets just hope this test turns into a permanent service this time.

    Regards Richard

    HI AOD

It does seem to cache info. Just exited and changed channel and went back and all info still there. Then turned Pace off and back on and it had blanks again. Actually it seems to be getting quicker. Would play more but most go to work!

    Regards Richard

    Quote from the Pace website:

"We plan to upgrade the software for the Twin Digital TV Recorder in May.
We will announce precise dates shortly."

I wonder if they'll make the TV guide more navigable? The 7 day epg is great, but it takes a while to scroll through all the days.

Whoohoo! A 7 day EPG. Wonderful. And if they're as on the ball as auntie beeb was in giving us NICAM we might even be lucky enough to get it around 2010.
