My brother is being asked to re-locate to Northern Ireland from England.

This may be a stupid question but does he have to re-register his car in Northern Ireland. It is after all part of the UK.

Thanks for that, does that mean you kept the NI number plates too.

If so I guess the same is true the other way around.

People in N.I. buy cars from England all the time, there is no problem 'importing' them, nothing has to be done, it's the same system as the U.K.

You do not have to re-register the car, but many do, either to cover up the fact that they have been imported or to get a nicer number plate - recent number plates here have started with BIG, DIG, and OIL!

Wow, that's cool. He'd probably like a NI registration then. How would he go about getting it re-registered?

Yup you're right, importing means to bring a car from outside of your country.

Northern Ireland have their 'own' DVLA and different license plates, from what I understand when you fill in the bit of your V5 to say one has moved and one puts their new N.I address then it's upto DVLANI to issue you with local registration plates (if applicable)

I say if applicable as you see thousands of 'mainland' UK plated cars over there most on a perm basis, so I doubt there's an automatic scheme to transfer plates.

If you are refering to me - hence the inverted commas around 'importing' ;)

There is definately no automatic scheme for transfering plates. My sister just bought an english reg car.
