I read this earlier on. He would have had to have downloaded a hell of a lot to rack up that kind of bill, nothing like as little as the kid was claiming. That kid knew exactly what he was doing.

Moral - Parents, pay attention to what you're doing with your money. If you don't pay attention to what you're putting your credit card details into, then you're completely culpable. This is what prepaid cards exist for.

These types of stories come up a few times a year. No doubt The Sun or Daily Mail will pickup on this.
I remember the woman on benefits saying MS had stolen all her money because she had added a card and then let her son loose on the xbox and he purchased loads of Games On Demand and DLC.

A Games CONSOLE IS NOT A BABYSITTER YOU STUPID PARENTS !!!!

Over a 6 month period! More fool him for not checking his statements and seeing the money racking up.

I have little sympathy with the parents in the two cases in question, although I suppose that if they did not play games themselves then it's slightly easier to understand how they didn't appreciate that storing card details would allow the kid to rack up huge charges.

I'm surprised neither article makes any reference to teh fact that MS purhcases are always in points values too, not monetary values, and so it's harder for Little Johnny to know he's being a naughty boy.

(BTW, I'm sure both the kids in question were entirely savvy enough to know what they were doing.....)

In my day I racked up the phone bill talking and listening to premium rate women that I saw near the back of newspapers.
Its been going on for years this in different guises although I did tell my mum it was a game walk through line ;).
She believed me until she visited family in derby some months after and it came up in conversation and my cousin who is the same age did the same thing.
But didn't get away with it,and neither did I when they came home.

Live and learn I suppose

I have no sympathy for him, but I don't think that MS should keep your credit card on there systems, I mean when you purchase something over Xbox Live with your credit/debit card, those details are saved on your Xbox and you can just use it for whatever you like, maybe they should add a feature where you enter your security code from your card everytime you make a transaction.

Child calls Premium Adult chat up services and racks up £2000 in phone bills. Parents are in rage and blame "The Simpsons" for encouraging children to make prank calls and using adult services. They demand a refund and tell their harrowing story in "The Daily [-]M[/-]Fail".

You can already protect your gamertag to stop other people using it though.

If you have a kid, you can set up a child account and use the parental controls to restrict what they can and can't do. From the Eurogamer article: -

It should also be noted that Xbox Live accounts registered for children's use have online activity automatically defaulted to off, and these can be enabled, should the parents wish, in the family settings section.

These settings include specifying the email address to which all purchase notifications are sent and using other features, such as 'over the shoulder approval', that allows the account holder to give permission for purchases by typing in a password.
What the guy did is the equivalent of giving his kid his credit card and saying "you can only spend £10 on this per week!", but then blaming the credit card company when his kid goes out and spends £10,000. The responsibility is all his.

Father blames Microsoft as son spends £1150 on Xbox Live • News • Xbox 360 • Eurogamer.net

Or as I read it, lazy parent turns off all child friendly protocols, puts in credit card and lets 12 year old play 18 rated games unsupervised and as usual cant take responsibility for own bad parenting and is trying to blame someone else when it bites him on the back end.

Karma does exist ;)

He wants MS to apologise? what a joke!.

Judging by the tv they have,he isn't exactly going to feel it. The man is an idiot for not looking at his monthly statements and his son WAS fully aware that he was caining his father's credit card. I have no sympathy for these cretins who don't monitor what their kids are up to,whether it's making purchases on Xbox marketplace/iTunes,or what internet sites they are visiting.

There are stories like this every year, whether it is xbl, or mobile apps it is the parents responsibility to ensure that controls are put into place. It's not like MS don't put preventative measures into their system.

Why is it always 6 months before parents notice too?
Boy, 11, racks up £1,000 bill on mother's debit card playing XBox online | Mail Online

She won't punish her son because "he feels bad enough"? What a load of ****! The boy was most likely laughing his backside off when he told his school friends about what a mug his mother is. Doesn't ANYONE check their monthly statements? Both of these stories are proof that a lot of parents bury their heads in the sand when it comes to actually interacting with their own children
