Well, I've finally taken the plunge and bought a PS2 this afternoon with the Eye Toy, Rez and Auto Modellista this afternoon.

I've never fancied a PS2 before - I've made do with my ninja PC, XBox and GC - but the Eye Toy was the main reason for buying it. Given the glowing reports I've read on it and a quick go on it in our local Dixons with me, my missus and our 3yr old lad, we felt it was worth getting. It was a good laugh - despite feeling like a pratt in the middle of the shop... :clown:

Anyways, I've been looking on Play and the like at various other games but I'm not sure whats good and whats not on the PS2.

Has anyone got any suggestions for essential PS2 games?

metal gear solid 2 - sons of liberty. apparently better than the one after it. i think MGS3 is comng out in 2004 and it looks amazing.

mortal kombat deadly alliance is really good. has a few minor problems but still a good game.

i just ordered tekken 4 platinum. only £15 from amazon so i'll tell you how it is next week.

    Some must-have games (IMO)

Burnout 2 - faster than fast arcade racer. A pure adrenaline rush of intense racing. Highest possible recommendations for this game :)

GT3 - Platinum now, so you'll find it for almost nothing. Great sim racer with SO much depth

Virtua Fighter 4 Evo - the best fighter ever IMO. Deeper than anything on the market, but easy to pick up and play

Pro Evo 2 - The best footie game available in Europe (Winning Eleven is the JAP version of this btw - basically the same, minor differences between the two)

The Metal Gear thing split opinion, some loved it, some hated it. (I found it perfectly dreadful, frankly)

Grand Theft Auto III, and GTA Vice City are good, Medal of Honor (sic) too, and Gran Turismo of course.

Depends what sort of games you like really.

It's good to see Eye Toy doing so well. I can see it bringing lots of people to PS2 who otherwise might not have bothered.

Since you already have a Gamecube I'd suggest you leave Pro Evolution Soccer 2. If you like fotball games then Winning Eleven 6: Final Edition pisses all over it for me. Of course if you got your PS2 chipped then you could enjoy WE6:FE with the Wedoit English language patch, and there is also Winning Eleven 7 to look forward to next month. PES3 is due to be released in November.

If you like tennis then Virtua Tennis 2 has to be on your list, (unless you have a Dreamcast too). Also consider Ico, which is one of my favourite games ever.

Given that you have an XBOX, I'll avoid the multi-platform games.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2 - the best football game ever
GTAIII or GTA:Vice City - both excellent. I'd probably got for GTAIII as it's cheaper and in my opinion a better game.
ICO - best game ever made

Without wishing to be padentic, Winning Eleven 6: Final Evolution is far better. And it's available on Gamecube via Freeloader, so no need for machine chipping etc.

If you like platformers then ...
    Ratchet And Clank
    Jack and Daxter
    Sly Racoon
    Are all eye candy fests.
But the games to have IMO are
Burnout 2. Nothing comes close in terms of driving.
THPS4. Still playing it 6 months on (likewise for Burnout 2)
    Timesplitters 2.
    Azzo.

Can't believe there is no mention of the, IMO, best music game this generation, Frequency.

Ridge Racer V - totally overlooked at the time
Rez - excellent game and nice to hear on a decent system
ICO - have to say this is my favourite game ever made
Burnout 2 - great arcade style fun
Kingdom Hearts - great action rgp from square with disney characters
Gran Turismo - good if you get into it
VF4 Evo - best fighter ever

then get it chipped and get

    Winning Eleven 6: Final Evolution
Initial D - sega racer that is stupidly fast and pure acarde lovelyness ;)

    Azzo, what is THPS4?

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I might trade Auto Modellista in for Burnout2, and then save up for Ico and VF4 Evo.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

Come on, the greatest game of all time, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4.
If you want a challenge then this is the one to play.
Great learning curve and months of play.
    Azzo.

Oh yes SSX Tricky, how on earth did I forget that,
    probably more fun than THPS4.

Lets face it the PS2 has dozens of budget exceptional titles.

You can get a load of AAA games for the PS2 on platinum and 2 for £30 offers in HMV and the like. Some have already been mentioned (GTA-3, GT3, Virtual fighter 4 etc) but here are a few more well worth a look:

    Devil May Cry
    Baldurs Gate
    SSX Tricky

I can recommed the bes t first person shooter for the PS2.
Now forget Red Faction and James Bond, the best is Timesplitters 2 and I have Halo and Metroid Prime and TS2 beats them both. You can have 16 player if u link it up.

I'll go with that Martin, TimeSplitters 2 is fantastic! I rate that alongside Medal of Honor: Frontline.

I have a Japanese PS2 that is chipped and the UK version of Eye Toy works just fine.

Back to the thread in hand. Essential PS2 games IMO:

    Rez,
    Amplitude,
    Psyvariar,
    Metal Slug 3,
    R-Type Final,
    Shikigami No Shiro 2,
    Eye Toy Play,
    VF4:Evo,
    DoDonPachi: Dai Ou Jou,
    Gradius 3 and 4.
