If you like Fargo, you should love this.
Saw the first 2 episodes and it is First Class. All three headliners bring their best and are interlocked in the story. At reading the set up it's essentially Del Toro And Dano as the lifer front runners, literally, but from the opening scene it however becomes clear that Arquette's character is just as important. Now whether this continues, time will tell.
Del Toro's gravitas really shines here in his often underplayed style that relies on simple looks and softly delivered dialogue which rely on the writing being there and thankfully it is for his portrayal of Richard Matt. Dano plays the younger and slightly more impetuous role of David Sweat but not so in the usual Gung-ho let's do anything sense and it's his connection to Arquette's Tily, the civilian clothing supervisor, that prompts Matt's plan. In fact, as emotive as Sweat is, it in fact becomes clear that Matt is the planner for the escape and Sweat the hold-off and it's Matt's character's demands that when another wants anything from him, he literally makes them repeat his words in an almost crossroads demon type spoken allowed deal.
Arquette is magic as the aging, lonely and thus deeply vulnerable Tily. In fact, I think it's got to be one of her lifetime bests in the role and is so effortless to not see her but Tily, in all her simple undoings that led her to where she is at the outset, in a room being deposed.
David Morse also deserves mention here, as the time worn prison guard that's a little too close to Matt for his painting skills. In fact, it's interesting how the art loving Gene Palmer is willing to look the other way and/or help Matt out because of it but at the same time isn't so soft in his duties that he won't give a prisoner a beating - though he may be brought back to decency, if you will, should they also demonstrate a talent.
In many ways, the whole thing could've been another Fargo series what with the style of writing and sound of the locals and that's not a bad thing. But that would be to deny the uniqueness of this and it is at worst the superb series one and at it's best clearly shining above it.

Yes, superb show. Biggest challenge is not to Google what happened before its finished; well worth watching through. I thought it was all really well done, Paul Dano in particular excellent.

5 Episodes in and is a great watch, know nothing of the real life story, so have no idea how it will finish.

Quality show for the most part although I did feel that it could have been trimmed down by an episode or two. The flashback episode helped and was a clever way of altering your perception of the characters before and after their escape.

That unnerving scene above in @barnaby jones post was the first
crack in inmate Matt's armour. Prior to that he seemed in control, focussed and organised. Came across as potentially psychopathic beforehand (manipulation of others, superficial charm, etc) but after this scene he seemed more psychotic than psychopath.

Despite David Sweat's horrific crime I was still rooting for him to win his freedom although I guess it was poetic justice that his attempt was ended by a policeman.

The claustrophobia of being stuck in a heating pipe was conveyed in such a horrifying manner. Good work from Ben Stiller there and throughout the rest of the show.

Lyle's stupidity and naivety amazed me. Guy playing him did a brilliant job of playing a slow-witted character.

Edit - Also great to see how unsuited the psychopathic Matt was on on the outside. Without anyone else to manipulate into making his path to the goal easier he crumbled on his own. Think he craved death or recapture at the end hence the erratic shots at passing vehicles. Sweat, on the other hand, demonstrated that had he not committed that horrific crime he could have made something of himself in the real world. Sad.

The finale was slightly dragged out but on the whole I enjoyed the final two episodes. The flashback sequences were tense and revealed a lot about the characters and how they'd ended up together in Dannemora. What disappointed you about them?

I know it was based on true events and people. But Del Toro went from
king of the walk to jibbering, junkie moron, I was just screaming for Dano to ditch him from the second they got out. Now, I’ve known addicts and how their character’s change etc etc it just didn’t make for satisfactory viewing.
The flashback episode frustrated, spent a lot of time on irrelevant stuff when it could’ve been more illuminating.
also found it mildly amusing that Del Toro supposedly hacked up that old guys body and he didn’t get a drop of blood on him

That was the point about Richard Matt,
he was a junkie nut job which was revealed in the flashbacks. Whilst inside he made a life for himself, in a way, but once he got out he revealed himself in his resignation to what he was before. He was filthy but also kept changing to clothes they found and Sweat's stuff.
I think we can all agree that David Sweat should've left him but as he himself said, he's too damn loyal. If I were Sweat, I'd of got pissed at doing all the digging and left Matt inside.
Sweat was so unlucky to get caught. Even though he is a killer, I felt sympathy for him at being monitored in a lit cell as he is 24/7 because he made fools of the prison and legal service.
Ah, Tilly and her husband are such dumb arses in reality too. There's someone for everyone if you're stupid enough. Comforting, isn't it.
