My players started to have problems playing any DVD.

Basically what happens is he DVD will play fine for an unspecified amount fo time, say between 10-45 mis. Then it will either freeze or reboot to the main screen sometimes displaying an error. After this, if I try to play the DVD again, it will freeze very early on and will just display error on the screen. Eventually it will completely lock up. Only a hard reset will fix this.

FWIW it's a Yamaha S520 player and it's had very light use (maybe 10 DVD's a month tops, I've had it about 2 1/2 years (I think). I've tried a lens cleaner but no joy :(

Anybody have any suggestions? At first I just assumed lens but could it be some sort of overheating issue???

If it were a PC displaying this sort of behaviour I certainly would be inclined to think of over-heating as a possible cause.

I am also thinking overheating. Is it in a stack with limited ventilation?

Otherwise, I might be looking a problem with the drive inside. I had similar problems with a player and it was the drive unit at fault.

Can you try the DVD's on another player to make sure it isn't the discs.

It's on a shelf but sandwiched between my amp and my sattelite box... I might try it out in the open see if that helps it.....

Sounds like a plan, if it's anything like my amp, then it's gonna get pretty warm up there.

Funny thing, I didn't even think of the overheating thing until I'd typed out the post....
