Have you tried using a grey screen (non-ALR, just a regular grey screen)? It should help you get darker blacks.

You can get some samples from suppliers to test it out for yourself.
 
I've not tried a grey screen, still using my old battered white pull up screen at the moment
 
By experience a proper UST ALR screen does help quite a bit with the poor black and perceived contrast. I am however wondering why manufactures insist on making UST projectors so inferior compared to their "normal" range of video projectors. Regarding the 4K vs 1080P discussion I would rank resolution quite far down the list in terms of what it takes to make a great video viewing experience. Black level, contrast, color and optical sharpness all being above.

Its a shame it requires a certain screen to get the darker blacks, kinda defeats the object of what the projector is for.
