To celebrate 1000 issues Entertainment Weekly have published a list of 50 classic games from the past 25years.

Personally I think it is rubbish, what do you think is right, and what would you add or remove.

The small fact of there being no mention of Elite, means this list has no kind of credibility.

Standby for plenty of arguing over exclusions, lists like these will never please everyone (Not knocking your post Spank-A-Thon) it's a general comment and someone will always think that a game they personally loved should make the list even if the majority of other people disagree.

Just remember that so long as you loved the game yourself it matters not if anyone else should be converted to your opinion and even less so if any list includes it.

That said, of the games i personally loved, where the hell are Terranigma (snes), final fantasy tactics (ps1) and banjo tooie (N64) :rotfl:

I think the main issues are games like GTA IV and CoD4 being on the list. They are popular/fun games. But classic status is something that takes more than 6months to achieve. In the case of GTA IV a month would be nice.

I just noticed that Halo was apparantly an Xbox360 game.

I agree about the games people love, hence why the likes of Mega-lo-Mania didn't get a mention from me.

But Elite.... I mean, the grand-daddy of the space trading/combat/exploration genre getting no love is just shocking! :(

Didn't get into it myself, but the word on the street at the time was it was amazing, therefore it should have been included, though console yourself in the fact that it was included in loads of other top 100 lists anyway.

Strange that not one commodore 64 game made this list either, what happened to impossible mission, the last ninja, international karate, paradroid and beach head, to name but a few.

Didn't even give it the time of day after they've missed Sensi Soccer off the list

I would want to see Rogue Leader on the Gamecube , Virtua Tennis on the DC and Burnout 3 on the list . Out of the games i've played , i'd give Perfect Dark and Knights Of the Old Republic the old heave ho .

hmmm, 23 games from the year 2000 onwards? need some more love for retro! although i agree a list like this is all up to the individual. i must admit this list looks like its based on sales more than anything, either that or they spent 10 minutes going through the boards over at gamesfaq! my list is entirely different - as im sure yours is, and yours, and yours etc.

It's not a bad list really, some notable exemptions but all in all most of the classics are there.

IMO the following games should be there, but that's just my opinion and the next person will think differently.

Elite
Kick Off 2
Laser Squad
Vulcan
Super Tennis
MGS4
ISS Pro Evolution Soccer
PGR2

I think if at least 10 games in the list would appear in yours then it's done it's job!

I agree with a comment above, some of the games are simply too 'new' to be listed as a classic game. Bioshock, Gears Of War and Call Of Duty 4 for example were outstanding games but I wouldn't describe either as 'classics', a couple of years from now and both will look ropey on the graphics side after which all they have is a half decent narrative.

I'd question Halo but I suppose there is a good argument for saying it spawned the console FPS era and thus will be seen by many as a classic. But then where is Quake, which spawned the 3D FPS genre?

All said and done though the list does have many games which I'm sure many of us would call classics - so they haven' done too bad a job IMHO.
