I've got a Dell Latitude Notebook running XP Professional and in Device Manager I have an 'IDE ATA/ATAPI' controller. Once expanded this shows an Intel 82801DBM Ultra, a Primary IDE Channel and a Secondary IDE Channel. If I click on either the Primary or Secondary Channel this open another window. I open the Advanced Settings and under transfer mode I've got the option of 'DMA if available' or 'PIO Only'
