I bet you one whole penny most of the forum members (pc section) and mods have used emulators. Fair enough its wrong to pirate roms etc but the emulators arnt technically illegal (i think). And anyway the psp section was full of advise getting emulators up and running (very helpful for me at least), didnt see any warnings given then. So here are my fave emulators, but i wont tell you where to get the roms from (google them).

    zsnes and snes9x
    dgen for megadrive
pj64 for n64 as it has the best compatibility
epsxe for ps1 games, my favourite as i can play all my legally owned ps1 cd's polished way beyond what the ps2 did.

Finally the one that started it all for me and still the best...MAME. ok not a console but who cares its much better.

To be fair i havent searched for roms in ages as i pretty much have those i want, and with the quality of games on current consoles they dont get much of a look in. Have fun.

emulators are only legel if they arent reverse engineered and dont use rom code from the original consoles. Virtually all of them do, such as ePSXe which requires a psx bios to operate.

Roms of course are entirely illegal.

You'll never find a single emulator that requires a bios file, bundled with one. There hasn't been a single court case won against emulators ( Sony tryed and failed to sue Bleem) and it's pretty much 100% agreed that they are legal.

Ummm ... don't you mean TRUE? That exactly what Brain says. Any emulator that requires a bios file will NOT ship with one - you need to find it yourself.

As you both say, the emulator is perfectly legal, the roms/bios are not :)

edit: Forgot to mention, I love WinUAE - the Commodore Amiga emulator

ok, i see your point on the bios not coming with it. but lets face it if yu want to run them, then your talking about putting the files in that are illegal and using roms which are making the whole discussion about illegal software, correct?

iv used emus and was under the impression the emus are legal!
its having the roms and not owning the origional hardware (game) that makes it illegal, thus my old megadrive and nes in loft at my parents keeps me covered ;)

If you like spectrum games do a search for "Jasper - ZX Spectrum Emulator" it's java based so you don't have to fiddle about with downloading bits. They have taken stuff off their sites if requested by the company.

    Brings back memories

well no you wont. That would make them illegal. Using the bios file that is required to run the (illegal) roms IS illegal.

'fraid it doesn't. Having a rom of any kind is illegal unless its been classified as freeware.
