......is it worth purchasing?

For the money I think it is - I have had one for quite a while now, these are the reasons

1, If you are buying brand new and definately want crt then you have piece of mind with the warranty and a superb picture for the money
2, They are small as far as crt's go
3, They are quiet
4, Although it may not be the best they come with a line doubler something all crt's need

They must be fed with the best quality source you can afford paticularly the cabling and they must be setup properly. If you are prepared to go second hand then there are some good deals out there with units with larger 8" tubes.

How would the Ellie XS2000HT compare to something like a Barco 701S?

Thanks.

They would be very similar the Barco has a beafier powerrsupply so the picture suffers less from bright changes.

The Barco uses an entirely digital chasis. So you don't have to oppen the case to play with dynamic convergence. The Barco has memory blocks to allow different aspect contol.

The Barco has component,RGB, s-video and component as inputs.

The Ellie will be a new projector with the advanges that brings.

Roland,

the $1m dollar question - if you had a max of c£4K for a projector would you buy one??

Neil.

but would purchase what instead then???

Yep. saw an 808S today with 1300 hours and an asking price of £3500.

I've gone for a 701S though. Suit me just perfectly and what an amazing improvement on my previous LCD. Wow!

Neil,
Just had an BG808 from Roland. It would just come into your budget but I did have a quadscan at the same price. I understand he has afew of these units at the moment. The only thing I would say against it is the sheer size. Don't get me wrong, it does the job better than any other PJ I've seen and in the room it's in is not too obtrusive but in a smaller room it could upset the wife:)

Speak to Roland. He's a great guy and will sort you out depending on what you are wanting to do!

Cheers
Alex:D

Messiah

Congratulations on your decision to purchase and good luck with your new baby!

Do keep us up to date on how you find Barco set up, access to resources (manuals etc.)

Peter

I'm not posting any more just PM people when they look like buying

You sound a bit bitter there Roland?

If you're in the mood for PM'ing then how about some details of these 808s you've got (and an up-to-date list of any others perhaps).

Regards,
Ian Guinan

Roland

I hope I did not upset you. It was your comment about your web site not being up to date that made me look elsewhere. I rely on the web and so discounted your list when you made that comment.

Apologies, but don't forget as a 701s owner I'll likely always be in the market for an 808 or similar ;)

i would deffinatly buy the Ellie, I had the 2000 and i was well happy with it,
it is true that the convergance is not done on the key pad, but it is a small price to pay, the barco projectors are excellent but i feel you pay for a name. The barco 808 that roland specialises in is a good model, but why pay 3500 or less when for 500,00 more you can get a new one that comes with warrenty and screens uk have excellent standards of customer service.

i have found many ideas in this forum some of which have been really great and helpful and Roland considering he was once Barco rep and not an engineer gives good advice.

Their engineers of Screens uk do a great job of setting the things up, and will not leave your home u ntil you are happy.

No disrespect to Roland - but i have to ask do you personally garuntee your projectors or do you buy them with warrenty ?

Well, I seriously considered the Ellie 2000 but as my first PJ I believe I have an equivalent picture quality (with remote setup/convergence) for a third of the price.

I'm happy, for now.

As a Roland customer I regard his personal guarantee more highly than any warranty that I have received with other AV equipment that I have bought from new. I have a problem with the green tube in my 1209s, I'm sure that if I had bought elsewhere they would have said it was in spec. Roland is coming to replace it on Wednesday.

On the Ellie, the fact that it won't even resolve DVDs 720x480 (R1) when using an HTPC is a big minus. It can only do 640x480 properly. 800x600 should be the bare minimum. A lot of people who buy the Ellie 2000 move on to something better fairly quickly, it does a resonable job but with it being the most basic of CRT projectors the urge to upgrade is too big.

Sorry caught me at a bad time.
There are a couple of people who sell projectors lurking on the forum adding very little then as soon as someone looks like buying they send off a private message.
I spend a lot of time trying to help people out and offering advice and it's nice when it results in a sale but that's not the reason I'm here.

I've never been a "REP" in my life thankyou. If the person who knows more about Barco CRT projectors would like to step forwards. I have spent the last 15 years with my fingers inside Barco projectors. I would chalange anyone in the coutry including the Barco reps to a projector set up competition. That is why I set up my company because no one else was doing it better. I looked yesterday and we spent over £10,000 on SPARE PARTS with Barco last year.

I have NEVER but NEVER bought a used projector with a warrenty. I sold over 50 Projectors in the last year and fitted nearly all of them myself. Every one came with a warenty (normally 12 months) from ME, B4 Projection.

Sorry Roland

no offence meant pal, it was just i was at the sound and vision sometime ago and they had a seleco and barco crt on show, i mentioned about a reconditioned one and said i had seen one B4
(your site) and they said they remebered you when you were rep for Barco and you just got fed up with the company and set up your own business selling and buying projectors, either second hand or reconditioned, i \noticed you on ebay bidding for the any barco that makes an apprearance, under another screen name.
so thats why i said that, no offence mate.

As a matter if interest i quote "That is why I set up my company because no one else was doing it better. I looked yesterday and we spent over £10,000 on SPARE PARTS with Barco last year. "

how do you managed to do that when a set of new lenses is approx £3000.00 and on the 50 machines that would mean you have spent 150,000 not 10k on barco parts.

or am i being picky!!!!

Matt,

Roland is one of the good guys and a friend to many of us on this forum. Your personal attacks on him are tiresome, he doesn't have to justify himself to you. You are the weakest link, goodbye...

okay
point taken,
but he does attack other makes, and when someone bites back he gets ratty, and i have seen on past threads where people have had to justify themselves to him, so whats wrong with the boot on the other foot for a change. And all i have done is ask a simple question and replied to a message he put , which is what this forum is about, if you have a problem with that Jeff get a life.

i have no probelms with roland at all, he helped me with advice on Glass lenses and mains noise problms i was experincing
and his info was well helpful.

but okay no offence meant,

My advice would be rather than use a pc go out and buy a decent Dvd Player,
As you have obviosly met everyone then who has bought an ellie 2000 crt, (a bit if a sweeping statement,)

fight for ellie!!!!
