Being a chemist it pains me to see the great table being burnt! But having said that this is a really clever entry - I like how you've got the obvious - chemical elements - and the the not so obvious - the element of fire. Nice one.

Great thinking and well shot, I would personaly have cropped some of the left hand side a bit, just a bit to much white for me. Well done, great entry.

Nice shot. I really like the lighting and colours - the paper is almost luminescent!
I would clone out the "page 1 of 1" text at the top if you can, but I don't think it will affect it's scoring in the comp.
    Very well done!

Sorry to upset you, but at least it only took 3 attempts to get the shot I was looking for.

That was my question:D followed by "did you do it indoors?":D

I think its a lovely shot, though agree with tryingtimes about the "page 1 of 1" bit.

The flames are nicely captured and a nice crisp shot.

    :smashin:

    Cheers

I can hear many high school kids cheering at this one..

Nice image, especially considering it only took 3 shots - I hear fire is quite hard to capture. Again, have to agree with the page 1 of 1 and there being too much white to the left.

I know what you mean and I did crop some of the left hand side and did try cropping out more but in the end decided the balance was wrong, partly because I quite liked the way it turned darker at the bottom left corner which I though balanced it (a bit)

    Again another fantastic entry.

I thought of something similiar....but wouldn't have got it as good as this.

Love the flame behind the Element page....very well thought through

The flame burning through the paper has been captured very well.
Science/Chemistry for me though was not a good subject at skool... I mean school.

Thanks for that, one of the reason I didn't crop out more of the paper was because I quite like the subtle colour changes.

1 of 1 :suicide: Doh, how did I not spot that.

Used a 40cm light tent with a black background. Got my son to hold the page with a slight curl on it. Had a plate underneath to drop it onto and catch any ash. Lit the corner and got off 2 shots as quick as i could (with a flash) before the light tent burst into flames.

1st shot the flame was too small and the second too much of the paper had burnt. After the usual "how much longer is this going to take" from my son he agreed to one more attempt. this time lit the paper and waited 3 secs before firing. Loving son then dropped the paper gave a cheery wave (bless him) and made a dash back to his X-Box.

Fortunately this last one came out the way I had envisaged.

If I'd have tried this, the whole light tent/room/house would have gone up in flames!

I saw this the other day and forgot to comment.
I must say I really like this. A great idea and very well executed. The periodic table was the first idea that came into my head when the theme was announced but couldn't work out how to present it. You have nailed it by setting light to it.
Great first entry. Look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Another one I like a lot. I was drawn to the Page 1 of 1 too, but I don't think it detracts too much from the overall image. I do wonder if it might look better with a different crop? There's rather a lot of dead space left and right.

Well done though, the fire is extremely well captured. I do hope nobody was hurt in the making of this month's competition :smashin:

I thought about doing this, but a bit different. I like the idea of burning it.

Anyhoo that picture of the periodic table is also the one i printed out (the first hit in Google )

Quite a few people have mentioned the amount of black/white and the cropping so I guess they can't all be wrong. My only problem with making the page shorter as in your version is that it's a staight line as opposed to the top edge which has a slight curl. Once you notice it, it stands out a mile. A bit like the 1 of 1 I forgot to remove.
