I have just received a letter from sony stating that the KV36HQ100 has a slight electrical problem.
Has anyone else had one, and do you know what the problem is.
Sony say that it may be possible to get a shock from the TV and that it must not go on until they have sent a specialist out.

    OOPS!!!

That sounds like Sony have discovered a potentially dangerous earthing problem.

TV's are subjected to a safety test, which is a necessary part of BEAB regulations, known as the flash test. Basically, the set is plugged into a high voltage generator, a probe is placed on the tuner and about 5kV is fed through the TV for a few seconds. No high voltage must break through otherwise the customer is liable to receive an electric shock should they put their hands in the wrong place (aerial lead) when the set is running. Naturally, most of us just plug the aerial in just the once when we initially set the TV up on its stand, then turn the TV on, thus the risk of shock is almost nil. However, because there is a chance that somebody could pull the aerial lead out while the TV is running and expose themselves to a potentially lethal electric shock, Sony are legally obliged to inform all customers of the suspect products that their TV may have a problem. Then Sony have to get the sets checked out as quickly as possible in order to minimise the potential of somebody being injured, or possibly killed. You can imagine how costly that could be if it happens.

So heed the advice for your own safety.

Just rang the number,Sony's take on it is the set needs an additional insualtor on the back, otherwise the back COULD become live! They are ringing with a day/time,.takes about 30 mins to do and is done in situ (good job because if they weanted it back i would want my ££££ back!!!) I'll report back when i've watched them do what they need to do ;)

    Hi
I asked our tv engineer about this today and he said the modefication would take at least an hour and it is not really safe to have the insides of a large TV on their front room carpet(kids and pets wondering about).

Got my HQ100 fixed today. A couple of cable ties and a bit of plastic, and that was it.
