I've seen several retailers say a good speaker cable should consist of many thin threads, instead of fewer and thicker ones.

Cable gauge being the same, does one of the following builds have any real-world advantage (apart from physical flexibility)?

    Thanks.

It's really not worth worrying about. Flexibility is about the only difference. :)

Someone might try to baffle-with-bull with potentially lower effective skin resistance on the many/finer cables, but to be honest, as eviljohn2 says, you won't notice any difference.

    Go for the cheapest.

Baffle-with-bull is definitely the case for audio frequencies as skin effect is only relevant at high frequencies. It should therefore be at least considered when designing digital/video cables but is of no relevance when dealing with speaker cables and analogue interconnects. :)

If the cables offer the same (or very simlar) total surface area across all strands (which is likely) then most people would be hard pressed to tell any difference.

As has been stated, if the cables are otherwise the same (purity, construction, etc) then go the lowest cost option.
