@Steve Withers will the addition of an Apple TV compensate where the TV doesn’t have Dolby Vision capability? For example, let’s say I have a Panasonic EZ952B which won’t ever have DV. If I add the Apple TV, will I be able to enjoy DV by accessing Netflix via the app in the Apple TV instead of the app in the Panasonic TV?

No, all stages of the chain need to be DV capable, you'll just get HDR 10.

Hi Phil,
I really don't understand why you get so much stick with the Nvidia Shield.
I've had about 10 media streamers over the years and without a doubt, The Nvidia Shield is the best all-rounder. The Nvidia Shield is definitely the one to beat

Is there any streaming player that keeps a mini-player and sountrack of the programme you are currently watching whilst browsing content in other apps? It's the thing that stops me switching from Sky - on all the players I've researched pressing Menu and your're presented with SILENCE and a menu system. Doesn't make for a good experience, IMHO.

Shouldn't there be a "best video streaming service" award as well? Netflix and co get a nod in the video app category, but that feels like a poor fit.

Also, the ATV also has "My5" now, with ITV Hub incoming shortly. Plus it has MUBI and Shudder, which is of note for the arthouse and genre fans.

Kodi allows you to browse your other media whilst it plays something in the background.

Are right, I've kind of given up on Kodi and just want a nice interface on a commercial box with apps like Netflix, Amazon, Catchups, NowTV etc. Something to enable me to ditch the £100+ sky box.

i have about 20 remotes from different Hardware manufacturer stored in some box, and the only remote one that fits them all is the Harmony from Logitech, it controls everything even the phillips hue..

Must agree, the Harmony Elite for me. Zappiti remote still in the box.

I’m one of those who doesn’t get why the Shield gets so much love. An ambitious do it all sort but just never worked properly. I haven’t had one for ten months but from what I’m reading it is just as flawed.

As this is a Visual Sound quality forum .......
As we are now entering High end Streaming Device it seems for a while and even more so on products out now.

As more and more are jumping ship from Blu ray / 4K players to streamers / playback devices now that want a High end device that ticks a lot of boxes for Movie / Audio format support wise Etc .

The Zappiti players seem to do it all/play everything. I've recently got the Mini version and the only thing that's lacking, if you could call it that, is the absense of a wired SPDIF output (apart from internal HD mounting of course). They're quite overpriced IMHO, but compared to (many) others I've tried, and rejected, including the Shield, they seem to have very few issues. As for Kodi - I found it to be a nighmare. But these boxes will not really 'replace' a Sky/V6 box, as they offer many things over any streamer, so don't think you can just go out and buy your Shield/FireTV/ATV etc and ditch your Sky/VM box and get everything you can get on your SkyQ/V6, as you can't. I too thought (hoped) that you could until I bought a FireTV 4k box, which was returned.

Thats why the Zidoo X10 would of ticked your box more
SPDIF
Internal drive
Plays everything
Cheaper than a Zappiti
Same chipset so same visual Quality
Regular updates ....

I would of thought these two boxes would be in for best playback / Quality boxes for us Movie members .

Odd

A few years ago, which is a lifetime in tech, it was. The new model is completely different, and bears little resemblance.

Does the new model support Kodi auto framerate, Netflix 1080p/4K and Amazon 1080p/4k?
If not it still would be useless for my needs.
The Nvidia Shield has been out for over two years, with the same chipset and the other android boxes are still playing catch up. That's why the Shield, for the time being, will remain the best all-rounder android streamer :)

For me Kodi, Netflix and Amazon are irrelevant to a box of this sort, though it will do Kodi if for some reason somebody wanted that and anything else in the Android store.

The Zappiti has its own elegant media centre which plays files my ripped without issue. I could never say the same about the Shield despite trying at length. That is it’s main raison detre.

I don't have any issues you have highlighted with my ripped media :)

I currently use my panasonic ub900 uhd player for streaming aswell as discs. It feeds my lumagen pro which in turn feeds my jvc x5000 projector.
I use Netflix and Amazon prime.
I am not convinced the ub900 is that great a streamer it only plays streams at 60fps and sometimes the HDR looks horrendous s2 e1 of the grand tour is awful in uhd HDR.
Would buying one of these streamers give me a better picture for HDR streaming .. if so which one. I always like a bargain so the fire tv 4k at £59.99 looks appealing but will pay for the best quality one (picture quality and correctness is important) I understand the Apple 4k is sending incorrect metadata for HDR is this Likely to be correct soon ?

It's for streaming Netflix 4k HDR Amazon prime 4k HDR iPlayer 4k ect all in the best no compromise picture quality. I am leaning towards Apple TV 4k even though I have nothing else Apple...

Agree on Nvidia Shield. Awesome machine. Nothing on the market at the moment that can rival it for power and speed. 4K content, games and Kodi run like a dream. Mostly use mine for IPTV via apps like Perfect player, does the job.

To play raw 4k HDR files, i.e. 86GB King Kong, found the Egreat A5 to hit the spot.
Automatically changes TV picture mode to HDR, plays from network storage too and adds nice posters and info to your collection. Must have device. Saw one go for like £40 on ebay the other day. Plays any file from across the network.
My entire media collection in on hard drives and no fuss messing around with discs. Can't even remember the last time I brought a dvd or blu-ray.

Netflix probably has the largest 4k library and respect to them for investing in 4k years before anyone else did and it's paying off too. Hope they get into sports one day.

Will the Nvidia not play those 4k HDR raw files?

Just bought one off the back of the reduction in price (159 quid including the game controller)

Yes it can via Kodi but playback is not as smooth. I have tried others players on there like VLC, MX player with the same results. 1080p no problem. All this was a content from a USB drive, I was not streaming.
Personally, I prefer a stand alone player for my media 4k, BD rips, Blurays or 1080p which is why I like the Egreat.

I've ordered the Shield from Amazon and if I find issues with play back I guess I can return it and look at something like the Egreat. Thanks for the response @Hampy1972

Here to help, don't get me wrong, I use the Shield virtually for everything IPTV, Youtube, Netflix, Gaming and other bits too. It is very versatile, I would never sell it.
I was disappointed that it struggled with the raw 4k files, could be the size of them plus there is no really built in media player either so you go searching for apps to play your content.

Keep it and see how you get on. :D
