    HI All,

I have a budget of around Aussie Dollars 300-400 (GBP 175-250) . My budget is very tight and looking to buy some decent set of bookshelf speakers.

I have narrowed down the options to these models(but I’m also open to any more suggestions):
    I have converted these to GBP equivalent values from AUD;

    Edifier R2000DB - GBP175
    Edifier S880DB - GBP 200
    Q Acoustics 3020 - GBP 250

I’m not sure which one to buy. Is the price of Q Acoustics worth the premium above Edifiers?

Really appreciate if you could kindly advise.

    Thanks,
    M

The EDIFIERS are Active Speakers, they have their own built-in Amp, plus many other features. The Q Acoustic 3020 are Passive Speakers and require an external Amp do drive them.

    Do you have an Amp?

Do you need the features? Or more appropriately, what features do you need?

The Edifier S880DB (£260/pr) has Optical/Coaxial/USB though it is not clear whether that is USB-Media or USB-PC. It also has a 3.75" Bass Driver which is on the small side -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-S880DB-Bookshelf-Speakers-Bluetooth/dp/B07CHSD94J/

Here is the Edifier R2000DB (£240/pr), which has a 5" bass driver, Bluetooth, Optical, Analog, and a Remote Control -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/EDIFIER-EDFR2000DB-Home-Audio-Speakers/dp/B00O3K7GP0/

The Q Acoustic 3020 (£120/pr) is a very good sounding speaker, but it is purely passive, and requires an additional Amp -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acoustics-3020-Bookshelf-Speakers-Graphite/dp/B00TR7I1EY/

If you need an Amp or Pre-Amp we would need to know that, and to know the working budget for that amp, and of course, what features you might require.

If you consider the Q Acoustic 3020, then consider the SMSL AD-18 Amp -

    SMSL AD-18 Digital Amp w/ Optical Inputs - £123 -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/AD18-Bluetooth-Digital-Decoding-Amplifier/dp/B01M3ULDG9/

Combine the 3020 and the AD-18 and you have a pretty nice system.

In my opinion, the S880DB are too small, and I would try to determine if the USB is USB-Media or USB-PC. USB-PC meaning it can be plugged directly into a computer.

If you want to go a bit more money, consider the Edifier S2000 PRO (£430/pr) -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-S2000-Pro-Active-Speakers/dp/B01MTJ0FEY/

Also, what is the primary sound source for this system? Computer? TV? CD Player? Network Player? Other?

Thanks a lot Steve. Thanks for clarifying the active and passive specs of those two I didn’t realise before.

I don’t have any amp at the moment.

I’m trying to upgrade from my basic JBL portable speaker to go to next level of audio experience.

I plan to use this in my living room connecting to tv and also to use to listen to Spotify and other YouTube music streams through Bluetooth from my iPhone and iPad.

As you are connecting to a TV why not get a surround receiver to allow for future upgrades? I the UK we can get the Yamaha RX-V383 for £149. So just add some passive speakers, like the Q Acoustics 3020 for £120, and your on your way to a surround system. This route would also give you AirPlay support as well as MusicCast multi-room.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Yamaha receiver is quite expensive here in Australia around GBP 250-290. We only have a limited choice and things are quite expensive in down under. The Q Acoustics 3020 also cost GBP 250 here :-( . So this blows the budget . But I will definitely think about this again as it gives much more opportunities to upgrade in future.

I would check on the cost of the Yamaha RN602 in Australia. That's a lot of amp with a massive amount of features including built in Network Streaming. Considerably over your budget, but well worth considering if you can raise the money -

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Yamaha-R-N602-MusicCast-Receiver-Black/dp/B0148NKVJY/

For Streaming, even something like the roughly £30 Google ChromeCast-Audio is better than streaming directly from your phone. Chromecast and similar Network Streaming devices only use the Smart Phone as a control device. The Smart Phone controls the stream in the same way that a remote control controls the TV. You can start a stream using the Smart Phone, and once the stream starts, you can literally shut the Phone off.

Here is the compact SMSL AD-18 from Amazon-AU -

    https://www.amazon.com.au/SMSL-AD18-Audio-Amplifier-Bluetooth/dp/B01MYMXX5X/

This doesn't have Network Streaming, but again, Chromecast-Audio is on about £30 in the UK.

Not sure where you are shopping but the Q Acoustic 3020 are about $420/pr -

The Edifier R2000DB are listed at about $325/pr -
