The last 2 items I've sold on ebay have been major hassles! Both items were of quite high value and it just seems its full of time wasters. Whats the point of bidding on an item if you have no intention of paying. The first guy said his car broke down and it was his wife's birthday so couldn't afford it. Then the other item I sold the person is saying he's tried paying for the item but it won't let him complete and his only option is to pay over a few installments which I don't think paypal will allow him? Seriously makes me think of closing my ebay account down and just using cex etc

Same with me - sold item and no payment no contact or anything from buyer. Used an offer from ebay for no selling fees which i have now lost and still have the item facing high selling fees if i relist

I have rules set up so no one can buy off me unless they have a PayPal account and don't have less than 20 feedback. Probably miss out on some bidders but always get paid no issues. Also have any people outside of the UK blocked from bidding, these all really help.

The person with the PayPal issues has just messaged me saying he has a £500 limit and they need to do some checks so he can pay in the required amount, is he lying or telling the truth?

That has happened to me. Also if they have a PayPal credit card like myself PayPal does allow you to pay for an item in installments if the buyer chooses to do so.

I don’t have those rules setup but will do. I’ve just “sold” something to someone who hasn’t bothered to pay and has zero feedback. PITA I want to avoid in future.

i'd never sell on ebay now, and only buy from online shops there...too much hassle, and it's what ebay want now...

If you know what your doing it's no hassle at all. Over 1,000 feedback and works fine for me.

It is what it is really. It's not Ebay, it is people.

Frustrating I know, but it probably gives you the best deal most of the time. That's if you get a deal on the selling fees (which they often send you), for higher value items.

Selling anything is a pain if you ask me. You have to be thick skinned and patient :)

If you go into your account settings you can set buyer requirements and filter out some of these weasels

Reminds me, I sold an item recently and the buyer didn’t pay. Had 1500+ positive feedback, so I assumed he’d changed his mind and knew how to play the system. No contact no nothing for nearly 2weeks.

Sent him a message saying ebay was better off without people like him (or words to that effect) and that I’d be raising a dispute blah blah blah

He contacted me in the end and turns out he’d been in a pretty bad accident in the snow and had been in hospital.

Obviously I felt awful, apologised profusely and cancelled the dispute.
Just goes to show you never can tell

Agreed. Never deal with any newbies, and make it clear in the ad that immediate payment is expected. If I buy anything I always pay the same day, there's no excuse for not doing so (other than a bad accident as above, lol). Fortunately not ever had any trouble selling anything on ebay, the only time I did was the one time I used Gumtree  never again.

The only real annoyance is people trying to make stupid low ball "Buy it now" offers on an auction.I would however never buy or sell a car on ebay, far too many scammers out there.

How do you know. Did he send you a doctors note? I find it odd that someone agrees to buy something on ebay and then the next minute they are in hospital.

No, didn’t ask him for proof. Took him on face value. Of course there’s no guarantees he’s not lying but why go to that extreme, he could of just kept quiet. The worse outcome for him would’ve been a nonpayment black mark, doesn’t affect his feedback

Did he end up paying for the item or had you already re-listed and sold it, he sounds genuine to me.

EBay. The virtual high street for all other online retailers.

Wonder if this was ever Pierre's vision

    * WARNING * Don't think your safe with PayPal. Google ebay PayPal chargeback scam to read the growing stories of sellers being scammed. My wife has just gone through this. Sold an item which fortunately had a low value of £7. Buyer left positive feedback. Roll on a few weeks then get a message from PayPal saying the buying has opened a chargeback claim with there CC company. Wife didn't send the item tracked so the buyer got their money back plus the wife got charged £14 by PayPal for processing the Chargeback. After she spoke with PayPal they basisly said if it's not sent tracked to the correct address you've got no chance. Some stories of sellers losing many hundreds of pounds via this scam is pretty scary. Don't trust anyone regardless of feedback and always post tracked.

Which is exactly why we use tracked services for anything more than £10 such as Hermes , we've had the odd issue with buyers , but with over 3 thousand seller feedback then I reckon we've done ok , in fact it's paid for a holiday to Japan in about a year ....

Quite agree ebay isn’t what it once was.

My bug bear are the people who shill bid on their own items to bump the price- there are a few giveaways... then the item gets re-listed a few days later...

Talking of scams- Sold an Alienware PC a while back... turned out it was to a chap on an army base.
Claimed it had been wrecked in transit as it was poorly packed and he didn’t believe it ever worked saying bits were missing; though couldn’t send pics as his camera was broken...
When I replied with a link to many photos of the PC being packed and a video of it booting and serial numbers etc miraculously he got it going...

Will never send anything without tracking or insurance... and for anything being collected only cash - as otherwise if they pay via paypal and collect there is no proof and paypal will refund if a charge back is filed.

Not really following that- chargeback is only applicable to transactions of >£100?

No Sir your sadly wrong :( You might be confusing it with the £100+ CC protection? Don't send anything regardless of value un-tracked if being paid via PayPal, and that's the same if selling outside Ebay.

Worth noting that if a CC/paypal chargeback is registered against you its the buyers CC company that make the final decision not PayPal.

Totally agree been buying and selling on eBay for 10 years. 1st thing I was told however cheap the item your selling is send recorded so you can provide PayPal tracking details then your always covered.
