I noticed today for the first time that eBay have started automatically listing their ads on Gumtree (which is owned by eBay). As far as I can tell this is being done automatically by eBay without notifying their sellers. I'm assuming there is something vague that covers this within their t&cs but expect that most people will be completely oblivious to this action.

The ads are placed automatically by Ebay with an eBay link. They are not linked to Gumtree accounts so cannot be removed on the Gumtree website itself. At the moment there is no eBay option to opt-out of this so the only way to prevent an eBay advert appearing on Gumtree is to remove it from eBay.

As well as obvious privacy concerns this can also lead to double listings with potentially different prices on Gumtree if the eBay seller has also listed the item on Gumtree.

Madness? Privacy concern? Perfectly justifiable? - What do you think?

What are the privacy concerns? Is this just basically an advert for an ebay search item?

How can the prices be different?

The prices can differ if the seller has perhaps unwittingly advertised on both platforms not knowing that eBay will duplicate a link on GT

It's not quite the same as it appears as a proper listing on Gumtree in a similar manner to actual Gumtee adverts. When you click on it you're then diverted to eBay.

The prices could be different if the seller has placed a separate Gumtree ad and priced the item lower due to the absence of fees. In that scenario both the Gumtree and eBay ads could show up as separate listings on Gumtree.

There are some very disparaging comments about Gumtree on this very site - alluding to it being a den of thieves and criminals. Someone of that opinion would surely not want their eBay ads appearing on Gumtree and wish not to deal with Gumtree users. Surely you shouldn't have to justify not wanting an eBay ad to appear as a listing on Gumtree anyway, no?

Is it not a privacy concern to have photos and information that you placed on eBay then appear as a listing on Gumtree?

I see. Well presumably in this new era the seller won't need to make their own advert :)

I don't think so - everything you put on ebay is fully public - not quite getting what is put at risk by adding it to another platform which just links back to ebay.

So why bother advertising anywhere apart from eBay then because you can just search for what you're looking for there? Might as well close the avf classifieds. Someone may want to list an item on Gumtree at a lower price where they can be contacted directly by phone or email without eBay involvement. It's called choice.

Here's a scenario: Two parties get into a heated dispute over something on Gumtree. One party decides that they no longer wish to use Gumtree in order to avoid the other. The other party then happens to discover their contact details via an eBay advert that was automatically placed on Gumtree.

I just don't think eBay should be allowed to list your advert on Gumtree (and remember we are talking about an actual Gumtree listing and not an ad) without notifying you and gaining consent.

Fair enough. Just seems like more reach to me. You still have the choice to list on Gumtree - they don't have to be the same price. If Gumtree is cheaper they will buy that right?

Not sure what the reference to closing avf classifieds is? Plenty of people don't use ebay at all, right?

What 'contact details' can you discover on ebay?

What stops that party finding it directly on Ebay themselves? And you don't have a user name on Gum Tree anyway.

Nothing. But they might not use eBay or not have thought of it.

Look, it was just a hypothetical example off the top of my head. I just don't think a company should be able to relist your advert on a different website without first notifying and gaining your consent. If others disagree that's fine. That's my opinion and I understand that others will feel differently. If I'm in the minority I'll hold my hands up and say, you know what - I got that wrong.

Me neither, just stating my belief on the issue. You do have a username on Gumtree btw and if you were already in dispute then they would most likely have gotten your name by that point.

Anyway, I've made my point and stated my opinion so will say no more.

Isn't Gumtree attracting the Jeremy Kyle type of audience that eBay didn't want?

I hate and very rarely use eBay these days, and have never used Gumtree nor can never imagine having the requirement to do so. I honestly thought most of the tat on Gumtree was nicked or of dubious sources.
