I'm spitting mad at the minute...

    Bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 on ebay a few weeks ago. I knew it was used, but it was described as follows;
"This phone is: Grade A - Excellent condition used mobile little or no scratches at all, top quality example. Overall an excellent condition used mobile. Ideal for 'like new' gifts"

The phone arrived and it was filthy. Scuffed, damaged and full of dirt and grime inside the back cover. It was in considerably worse shape than my wife's 4 year old S3! I contacted the seller straight away and returned it, they refunded me, but then I left negative feedback. The phone wasn't just not quite as described, it was absolutely abysmal and I thought that others needed to know the truth of what to expect from "Grade A".

Just checked the seller's account out of curiosity to see if they had replied, and it's gone!

Called eBay and they said that the feedback had been removed because it had been requested by the seller and met the "criteria" for removal. They couldn't/wouldn't tell me what those criteria were.

So basically this guy is selling crap, and when they get a bad feedback they just manipulate the system and have the feedback removed to keep their slate clean!

I'm just curious to see how often they have done this. They have 17k+ positive feedback and zero negative which is why I trusted them. However their most recent feedback was a negative and I'll be watching closely to see if they get that one wiped too!

IIRC, feedback is about the 'service' you receive.
IE how quickly they posted it etc.
I don't think you're allowed to critique the actual product.
Daft as it sounds, but this is why I think it was allowed to be removed.
Because you were commenting on the product, not his service.

    If so, that's really nuts.

So I could set up a listing for a brand new Samsung S5, then deliver a clapped out Nokia, but provided I delivered it quickly there's nothing the buyer can do to punish my dishonesty?

    The system is a crock.

That's about the sum of it, yes.
In fact, in your scenario, you're really supposed to give him positive feedback for taking the return back and refunding you promptly.
    Mental, innit.

But when you leave feedback, isn't one of the ratings/questions- 'How accurate was the item description?'

Yes, and I gave a resounding 1 out of 5 stars for that.

But at the end of the day this guy sells thousands of items. A 1 star rating will not make a dent.

I rarely check those detailed ratings unless I'm in a big hurry for something and want to be sure they post quickly.

What I do look for is negative and neutral ratings, and the content of that comment.

Yes, you could obviously mark him down for that.
But, and I stand to be corrected here, I'm still pretty sure you're not allowed to give neg feedback on the product received alone, you are commenting on how they performed as a seller.
You do still see it, you see the odd feedback saying "sells fakes stay away", but I'm assuming the seller just hasn't got around to reporting them.

This is the reason why I never buy high value items from ebay. Too many dishonest sellers (& buyers) & ebay actually exacerbate the problems.

After speaking to a supervisor at eBay, they agreed to monitor the seller and if this kind of feedback removal was an ongoing thing they would take action.

    Won't happen though...

I'm up to 428 trades and haven't had much hassle at all.
I did suffer the same as Dr.Phil though, a phone described as immaculate being a proper mess.
That seller tried it on, so I raised a case and won a full refund.

I'd say their performance as a seller is pretty damn s**t to be honest.

The only time that I, as a seller, have asked for and had negative feedback is when there has been a stupid buyer who has had a minor issue, not made any contact and gone straight for the negative.

Is the criteria that they promptly refunded you perhaps? E.g. if they sent an item that arrived broken, for whatever reason, and they quickly took it back and refunded, would that get a neg?

We bought a hoover from eBay a long time ago - our first Dyson. It was described ' like new' and arrived ' like old'. Luckily it was delivered by the seller for cash-on-delivery so we agreed half-time price was reasonable :)

No idea, they wouldn't share the criteria or reasons for the removal of the feedback.

It just makes a mockery of the feedback system.

I got a negative feedback from someone who bought one of my HD-DVD's and thought it was a DVD (despite pictures and HD-DVD several times) and then claimed it was a copy. Ebay hasn't removed the feedback. All for a £2.75 auction !!

That sucks, but so does flea bay, used it a lot back in the halcyon days but now it's pretty much tat and scammers, would never ever buy anything over a tenner now from it.

I'm absolutely certain that eBay 'sides with the money' whenever it can.

Clearly eBay's business needs buyers and sellers, but it is the sellers that directly provide eBay with its income.

Last year I encountered a seller that lists books that he doesn't have in the hope that he can source them after the purchase. In my case he couldn't and what happened was that after about 5 days he refunded my Paypal payment without any notification or communication at all. He had good feedback but when I looked closer I saw there were about 100 cases similar to mine each month but as they sold 1000s each month their feedback remained high. I complained to eBay about the practice asking for the listing to be removed as the seller does not have the items for sale and that his 'zero comms' practice was unacceptable.

the replies from eBay were full of agreement and support for me saying that the practice was not acceptable and would not be tolerated by eBay - but nothing happens. The listing (and others like it) remain to this day and feedback suggests that whilst there have been many purchases of it, none have ended in success.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

@nheather had the same with DVD's before but was actually sent one of much less value so by the time you return it they've had your cash for a while plus its just marked down as an error.

Might be your view of it, but it's not mine.
Like I said, over 400 purchases (108 in the last 6 months) and most sellers are great.
Had some stuff lately packed in such a way that it would survive a nuclear attack.
So there are still plenty of sellers out there, private and commercial, willing to put some effort in.

Personally I find the likes of CEX my new home for mobile purchases. Can often find a brand new phone for a decent price. Just picked up an S4 A grade for £170 and got £80 trade for my S3 plus a 12 month warranty. My S3 came from them 3 years ago aswell.

Deleted my account there after 10 odd years of being a member as I grew tired of buyers wanting everything for virtually nothing, moaners (sold a bike brake lever that had an image of a rusty cable behind it and the **** moaned that I did not include it in the package...) and rip offs.

Not missed it one little bit.

Be careful of anyone selling 'like new' . Bought a vacuum cleaner which was supposed to be a shop return. I suspect it was returned after a year of heavy use. Even the wheels were worn!

As I wanted the filters and some spares, I settled for a much lower price.

Amen to that, had far more grief in my limited trades on here than scores of sales on ebay.

Or the AVF payday loan scheme: sell PS4 on 10th of the month, buyer reports non receipt and then for a fortnight the excuses come from the seller then hit around 30th and the money is refunded after some moderator interventions and its all gravy now..
