They are planning a landmark to straddle a major road in the area see here - as far as I can see it will just cause accidents as drivers slow to look at it and take their eyes of the road ... surely ?

No problem for useless crap like this spoiling the landscape, but when it comes to useful items like windfarms - NIMBY!!

I know what you mean, personally I think wind farms look good, but not been close enough to know if they make too much noise.

A million windfarms in your own garden is still quieter than the damn M1! :D

This idea probably comes from the same bright spark that decided to call East Midlands Airport, Nottingham East Midlands Airport

Why do they do things like that.... spend a fortune putting arty nonsense on motorways and the like.

I can think of better ways of spending the cash and time they allow for things like this!! :thumbsdow

I guess it gives you something to look at, as you sit stationary in a massive traffic jam.

Personally I'd prefer that the roads were given adequate capacity before they start to hang baubles on them.

The local council representative probably has a brother in the construction business and a cousin who will supply all the steel to build the stupid thing. ;)

Actually, there have been thefts of aluminium from safety barriers of roads crossing the M1...I wonder if we'll see a sort of acrobatic pilfering display from this?

Initally I agree - this seems a waste of time and money. But I suppose its nice to have landmarks built throughout the years... what would future generations have to look back on otherwise? These things are the Cleopatra's needle of our time. It would be a shame to only have buildings as a reminder of these times.

I'm all for landmarks, but to have one straddling an already congested and dangerous road seems like a recipe for disaster for me.

Well that will probably be the next thing after several fender benders due to people looking at the so called land mark

It probably won't be gov't or council money used to pay for this. It is usually funded by Arts Foundations created in trust to use up large profits / attract tax breaks by big companies.

That said, it looks good and will get plenty of publicity when a Fathers-For-Justice protestor is swinging from it in a spiderman costume!
