Why geo-restrictions matter when it comes to streaming?
All streaming fans know that there are certain restrictions when it comes to streaming particular libraries and content. Especially those, who are not based in the US. As we know, the majority of the best TV shows and movies usually come from the US, the likes of GOT (HBO) alone make us want to be from the US and access all their channels with no fuss. Hulu, HBO, ABC, US Netflix all have content that doesn’t even come close to other countries, therefore, everyone else is limited to way smaller libraries and a list of movies and TV shows that is nothing compared to the US. Moreover, sometimes your favorite show is just in another country’s library and you can’t access it.

How to bypass the said geo-restrictions?
The best way to those who want to bypass the geo-block is to get a VPN. A VPN is a virtual private network that can change your IP address with one click. This means that if your favorite show is only available in France, you can connect to France’s servers and now you can access that show! VPNs are mostly used as a security product but often are used for streaming and bypassing geo-restrictions.
And no, not any VPN will do. Most streaming services know of this trick and try their best to blacklist VPN IP addresses, increasing user frustration. To be honest, there is only a handful of VPNs that work with the most popular streaming websites.

I'm guessing NordVPN have paid AVF for this promotional post?

For the record a VPN service is NOT always the best way of getting around geo-blocks. A VPN will almost certainly reduce your internet speed, how much by depends on many factors but the main ones are location of VPN server and how busy the server is.

For geo-unblocking content, far better (& cheaper) to use smart DNS services such as unblock-us.com, getflix.com or vipdnsclub.com With these, you simply change the DNS address on your router or PC (or other device) and that removes the restrictions without affecting your internet speeds. Having said all this, Netflix have cottoned onto the fact that nearly every man & his dog are/were using smart dns so have blocked many dns services. However some such as - getflix and vipdnsclub continue to work. Most (if not all) smart dns companies offer free trials (no payment details needed) so well worth trying them out before paying them.

Also what it fails to say is that Netflix and a lot of others are aggressive banning VPN IP ranges, causing a continual cat and mouse game.

If I was streaming I would want as little or no encryption to slow the speed down, especially over a continent. Unless its sensitive data who is prying? Also to bear in mind, data going into and out of the tunnel is vulnerable. IMO VPN with TOR using Tails for security is about as good as it gets for Joe public.
Streaming services don't Geo restrict because they want to, they have to because for licensing laws, just like the Premier league etc.
