According to Amazon.com, both of these versions are amorphoric. I have the same version as you and Im quite happy with it. Its far better than the region 2 version.

Last time I looked at their website was vey poor as did not feature all the titles and was very out of date.

Anyway I have Eagle has Landed R1 and it is letterboxed (non-anamorphic). Looks okay zoomed on a 32" w/s
Much better than the dire effort from Carlton.

I've been waiting for a decent copy of this film for a long time.

The UK release is infact a copy of the US theatrical print and is about ten minutes shorter.

The US Artisan copy is a little longer but still has some missing scenes.

The Version shown on the BBC (after the watershed) is the most complete version. Be warned, BBC also use a cut version that sometimes gets used for afternoon showings and it cut to ****.

Basicly, there still seems to be a lack of a definative version of this movie.

For more indepth details about the different cuts check out the link:

    The Eagle Has Landed

The details relating to the BBC version refer to the cut, pre-watershed print that they use.

I have a VHS copy taped about Christmas 2000-ish. This has all the violence (IE the head shot to Col Pitt etc) and the profanity (if anything happens to Churchill they swing you from Big Ben by the balls etc).

Hopefully, if this gets a late night showing again on the Beeb then they may even grace us with a widescreen presentation.

I saw and taped the version you mean on bbc. It was in widescreen and was a lot longer than the vhs copy i bought. It contained the head shot and some extra fighting. Is this not the same print as the Artisan dvd??? Oh, yeah it also showed a german playing the organ before the battle and him dying.

    cheers

All those scenes you talk about are on my Artisan DVD.

the running time is 131 minutes.
(But says 134 minutes on the cover?????).

Also it´s bizzare that´s exactly the same running time as the awful CARLTON P&S version is.
(But says 118 minutes on the cover?????).

Right, I think there's only one way to settle this. I'm off to Amazon to order the new version from Artizan.

    5 mins later.
Job done. I guess I'll be back here in about 10 days to let you know what I've found out. It'll be nice to see it widescreen (hopefully anamorphic) if nothing else, and if Maggi's right about the cut scenes actually being there, I'm laughing.
    I'll let you know.

That explains it, as when I watched the DVD I was sure there were extra scenes which were not in my VHS (from 4 Front).

Even if the BBC show it in widescreen won't they crop from 2.35 to 1.78 ? so still not a definitive version

The joke is Carlton own the copyright as its part of the ITC film library they one. Along with the Ipcress File why can't they get their DVDs right.

Amazon were the only ones (of my usual suppliers) I could find that definitely had the re-issued version. Might be worth noting that the usual suspects (Box Office, AB Sound, Lasersedge, DVD Planet) only seemed to have the older disc in stock, or at least, that's what their websites said. Amazon were a bit more expensive though. Time will tell, and it wasn't expensive anyway.

The new version looks to be a reissue of the original release - non-anamorphic 2.35:1, pretty dark and grainy (looks like an average LD transfer was used for mastering) with some print damage, and includes all the violence/bloody bits but doesn't have the "motivations" dialogue scene or the bit where the German plays the church organ during the final gunfight.
It hasn't been remastered so it's definitely not worth maggi buying a copy of this one aswell.

It's the most complete version I've seen in a while (running to approx 134 minutes) and its the proper ratio so I'm glad I've got it but the print could certainly have done with some attention before they mastered this one.

Did the original release have the Winston Churchill biography and filmographies on it? If not then they've added those as extras.

    Rambo,

I have the older version. It also runs for 134 mins and has the scenes that you mention. It also has the biographies. It does not show you the guy playing the organ at the start of the fight but does show you him slumped over the organ at the end of it. It seems to me that the newer release is exactly the same.

    cheers
