E46 Audio Upgrade advice

Active Member
I've got an '03 E46 and am disappointed by the basic sound from the speakers. Having taken some advice from audio installation shops, I am currently thinking of doing the following-

New Head Unit: Alpine 9856R
Wiring for Aux-In from mp3 player
Amp & Sub in boot: Alpine 10" vmax10.2 sub and 300.1 amp

I am advised that the existing speakers are decent enough and the best benefits will come from a new Head Unit and Improved bass.

1. Does this sound like good advice from people's experience? I am after a well rounded sound, like quite a wide range of music and don't need to wake the neighbours when I turn the music up...

2. I've read elsewhere about needing to make gaps in the boot (eg. by removing the ski cover for instance) to allow the bass through - though others say bass creeps its way through small gaps just fine anyway. Any views?

Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance.

The speakers are indeed much better than the line-fit head unit.

I'd be inclined to try replacing the head unit alone first from what you've said.
