    Hello,

I have done my searches on the forum, and I have never seen such a set of conflicting responses on the topic of the Dynamic Range Control in the Toshiba HD DVD players.

Some are saying it should be set to Off.

Some are saying that setting it to Auto is correct, because rather than crush the dynamics of the soundtrack, it raises some quiet parts to make them more audible (especially if your volume is set to anything less than cinema volumes). This is still compression of course, but it is not as damaging to the overall sound.

Then there are people who say they found when it was set to Auto their bass was crushed...and others who said they had an improved sound when it was set to Auto.

All I know for sure is what it says in the manual. This setting applies to Dolby TrueHD soundtracks and when set to Auto it is up to the authors of the disc to determine when DRC is or isn't applied perhaps in relation to a specific scene.

Have we conclusively determined the optimum setting for this feature on a high end full range system set to moderate but not crazy volume levels? Have we figured out whether it is peak compression or quiet noise uplift?

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I vote for 'off' too, auto screws it totally on my system.
