    Hey all,

I was playing with my Cambridge DAB300 today and found an option to amend the Dynamic Range Compression. The options were 0 1/2 or 1. Could anyone tell me what DRC is and if amending it would improve the sound quality? I know that sound on DAB is fairly poor due to low bit rates on most stations of 128kb and even lower but would be interested to hear if changing this would help?

    Thanks

It will do something like this chip (SSM2167) does :

Whether it makes things sound better depends on the channel and its content as well as your ears.
I would try it and see if it makes a worthwhile improvement for you.

Dynamic Range Compression makes quiet sounds louder and loud sounds quieter, so it's all at one level. This is unnatural, but it helps if you have a noisy environment like a car (or your missus is rattling the pans). It is mostly useful on plays, where some voices are much quieter than others.
Oh and on lots of Radio Four discussion programmes, where the levels sometimes seem to drop drastically and you can't hear what they're saying. I always end up shouting at the radio "Who's on the knobs today? Are they asleep??!!"
