Anyone bought a car recently, and can advise how long it takes for the DVLA to send the new log book?

Bought a car in England last week which I am importing to Ireland. Turns out the dealer gave me the wrong piece of the log book. He filled out the usual section as if he was selling within the UK. He should have given it to me and sent off the part declaring that the vehicle was being exported.

To cut the story short, I cannot now import the vehicle until I get the replacement log book, and if that is not within the next 3 weeks I could in theory be fined.

When I brought a new car last year, I think it took 1 or 2 weeks. That was via a brand new car bringing registered through a dealer though.

Bought my car last month and it took a week.

Ordered on the Tuesday picked up the car on the Saturday and by the following Tuesday my log book had turned up.

My note telling me my old log had transfered turned up a day later.

I'm guessing a new one has been applied for via either sending off one of the slips or requesting a replacement.

Although mine come through within 1 to 2 weeks of registration, the note saying I had sold my last car took a lot longer.

I'll call the dealer in the morning. With any luck they are terribly inefficient and haven't sent the paperwork off yet.

Failing that I'll call the DVLA and see what they can do, and also the revenue department in Ireland to see what their plans are. At the end of the day they generally chase people to register imports in order to prevent them from avoiding VRT (import tax). Because I bought an electric car there is no VRT payable so it shouldn't be an issue. They will backdate my road tax to the date I brought it into the country anyway.

Fines for late registration are usually a percentage of the VRT due so again the fact that I'm not due to pay anything should make it a simple decision.

    Thank goodness for inefficiency...

Called the dealer yesterday, they hadn't even posted it off yet!

So they are sending it directly to me and I'll send the export paperwork back to them. Sorted.

You'll be glad because my recent experience of getting the dvla on the phone was very difficult.
