DVI-D is true digital so if one of your connections is DVI-D then you must buy a DVI-D cable.

DVI-I is a combination port, it combines the digital DVI connection (DVI-D) with extra pins for analogue so it can easily be adapted to VGA without a £100 converter. A normal DVI cable should work fine - dual-link DVI-D.
