Good news for those with a single DVI-I connector that supports both VGA analogue and DVI-D digital. This thread here has details of a cheap splitter on ebay (BIN) that also appears to work as a combiner.

Don't get too excited though as the concept has so far only been shown to work when a single PC via VGA is connected. As my DVD player is off for service at present, I have yet to confirm simultaneous connections on the DVI-D+HDCP side of things but so far, it is looking good and cheap enough for someone to have a punt - less than a £iver inc P&P. I expect to confirm the DVD-D side of things in about a week or so, by which time the auction will have finished.

If it does work, I can see it being useful for many.
