I recently emailed DVDSoon about their decision to cut free shipping for individual titles and pointed out that although free shipping for five or more was OK the UK customers would get walloped for import tax. They have replied stating that over the next few weeks they will be introducing a system whereby you order five or more discs to qualify for free shipping, then pay a "small fee" for the titles to be mailed individually, thus avoiding the tax. So it'll be free shipping and no tax, for a price! Personally I'm boycotting them until they re-introduce free shipping for all orders.

Yeah, free shipping for five titles when shipped together is a worthless offer for uk customers. Glad to see they are at least introducing seperate shipping, although it would have been better if it was free

My understanding of the matter from reading their web site is that, yes you do have to order five titles at a time, but partial shipping is automatically applied, so if your titles have different release dates then they will ship as/when available, thus avoiding import duty.
Yes I would also rather not have to order 5 titles at a time, but as their prices are so good, especially with the exchange rate at the moment, I will continue to use them

This was my understanding too. We'll see shortly as I have 6 staggered discs on order.

You're quite correct. But thats only any use if you preorder lots of new releases and little else. To be honest I'd be hard pushed to think of 5 as yet unreleased titles to order in one go even if I had to. 2 or maybe 3 new releases at a time, but to order 5 title at least a few of them would be existing dvd's.

Oh, and remember, just because a title says pre-order doesn't mean they don't have it and aren't already shipping it. Many titles are availabe and posted a good week or two before the release date even though they are still showing as pre-order on their website. Now whether or not DVDSOON count these as eligable for staggered shipping because they are not officially released and ship individually or if they are counted as released and posted with any others in your order that are available I don't know, but it starts to get awfully confusing.

I always pre-order, and almost never buy 'from stock', for example:

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    X-15
    Schindler's List
    Futurama season 3 box set
    Walt Disney Treasures: Chronological Donald
Walt Disney Treasures: On the Front Line
Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse II
    Walt Disney Treasures: Tomorrowland

Not only that, but prices have recently dropped (no doubt reflecting the withdrawal of free shipping on single-title orders), and there was a voucher worth $10 on their site for orders worth >$150.

They've put there prices up since yesterday though. Must have done that to cover the free shipping offer.

Sorry if I'm being a thicket, but could you clarify that, please? How much are customs likely to charge me for the Star Wars Trilogy, pre-ordered @ $75.98, with the free shipping offer?

well i think this is bad news

    I ordered rain man for $10.98 and 4.99 P&P Total $15.97

    now it is $15.99

as much as I would find it difficult to order 5 titles to receive free shipping the option is now gone.

You are now paying 4.99 P&P on each dvd on an order of 5 that is over £10

However, that is assuming they have all gone up by that amount

^^ agreed. Some have done up by more, some by less. Overall I think we are worse off now.

Don't DVD Soon's prices tend to go up after the initial pre-order period anyway?

The shipping at DVDSOON is not free at all the prices from yesterday they went up so we are paying for the shipping I prefer it how it was.

I was going to buy from them jurassic park 1-3 they were $CAD 10.98 each now they are $CAD19.98 now that I don`t call it free shipping.

Free shipping is good if they left the prices how they were or put the price 10% up not 45% up

I am not going to buy DVD from them anymore not becouse they are not competitive but becouse they cheat it us.

People are free to choose any dvd e-tailer they want, but the fact is that for a big chunk of dvd's, dvdsoon is still cheaper than the others, despite prices going up a bit.

That is not cheating, they have to make money to survive as everyone else, and if they are forced to increase the price a bit, and yet being cheaper than others, it just means that they either played with extremely low margins, or they managed to get extremely good purchase prices.

The other issue reported on other threads, that dvdsoon is targeted by Royal Mail, that is unfortunate though, and that might steer away some UK consumers if buying bulk, but hey that is not the fault of dvdsoon.

Thirdly, unfortunately the Canadian dollar has strengthened for a while, it used to be nearly $CAD2.5 for every £1, then it went down to around $2.15 and now it has turned better again to around $2.3. Obviously this makes the dvds a bit dearer, but, that again is not a fault of dvdsoon.

At least I thank them for selling e.g. Lion King SE for $CAD12.98 and LOTR TTT EXT $CAD37.98, and that they introduced free shipping during a period making it really cheap to buy from them, now it is cheap.

And yes, the earlier you buy during the pre-order time, the cheaper it is. Lion King went up from $12.98 to 19.98, then 24.98.

I'm one member that will still buy from dvdsoon.
