"With DVD up-conversion via the HDMI output, HD DVD players instantly make a movie lover's existing DVD library look better than ever," Toshiba said.

The efforts are "designed to spotlight the superior benefits of HD DVD as well as the benefits HD DVD brings to a consumer's current DVD library by up-converting standard DVDs via the HDMI output to near high-definition picture quality," according to a statement.

Does this only apply to tosh hd dvd players, or is it all hd dvd players with hdmi?
    and if it is all...

if i play a dvd in my xbox 360 hd dvd with the 360 connected to tv via hdmi, will i also get this benefit?

i cant try it coz my 360 aint got hdmi but im thinking of buying an Elite, which does of course.

Yes, your add on (or 360 drive) will automatically upscale your sd dvd's, if connected with HDMI or VGA.

I'll add my experience on this. When I first got my HD-DVD Addon I tried an SD DVD (The Fifth Element) via it to ensure it worked and was underwhelmed with the picture quality.

When I got my free HD DVD's though it was the opposite; a stunning, crisp image, noticeably better than SD.

However, playing SD DVD's via the default 360 Drive does look like it upscales them (connected via HDMI) but I'm not convinced the HD-DVD Addon either does it at all, or does do it but not as well?

Maybe it's just me, I guess what I really need to do is try that same SD DVD again in both drives and compare it to be sure.

No the HD-DVD add wont upscale atndard DVDs.

The standard internal 360 Dirve WILL upscale them though and it does a very capable job too.

Yes it will, if connected via HDMI/VGA, same as the 360.

Upscaling is making SD look like HD, upconversion is converting composite to component, component to HDMI etc.

No it doesnt. Your TV scaler may have a go at it but the 360 doesnt upscale a DVD played in the HD-DVD drive.

Yes it does. The 360 does the upscaling, doesn't matter what drive you put the DVD in.

It doesnt matter if the SD-DVD is put in the 360 itself or the HD-DVD drive, the 360 is what does the upscaling.
