I remember when i first started browsing this forum, there was a post that went along the lines of "which DVD did you watch , from others reviews that you didnt expect to like,.. but watched it anyway and found the film fantastic"
These sort of reccomendations are really helpful in finding those little gems that often get overlooked, that could actually make it into your top ten.

It was from that initial post that i got to see the magnificent "Donnie Darko" and "Bounce".

A similar review early in 2002 led me on to "Memento".

So steering clear of the blockbusters, which DVD did you check out and like to reccomend? ..or even steer clear of?

    Favourite Movie was "Donnie Darko

My favourite purchase from this Forums reccomendations has to be
"24 Season One... Fantastic..worth every penny.

Dissapointing DVD would be "Manhunter"....One of those films i was just restless and irritated the whole way through.

    What about everyone else?

I finally got round to watching my copy of 'Ghost Dog' at the weekend and would recommend that thoroughly for something a little different, stylish and with some very intelligent humour in places.

I was worried that the overly Wu-Tang Clan/RZA based hip-hop soundtrack may have detracted from the film but it does the opposite, it really adds grit and shows off a decent system nicely.

Just thought of another hugely entertaining but overlooked DVD that's well worth a watch, 'Joy Ride' (aka 'Road Kill').

I trawl the recommendations at IMDB and Amazon and elsewhere to try and find movies that I would otherwise overlook. Also, conversations with other forum members are invaluable, particularly those who know your tastes. I'm discovering some real gems. Last great find was 13 Conversations About One Thing

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60489

There's a great joy to be had in "discovering" a great movie and telling your friends about it - but even more so when they say "Who's in that? Never heard of it " :D

And to think I bought Donnie Darko because it was going cheap and I thought it was gonna be a horror flick  Just goes to show :)

(P.S. Like Juboy, I really like Ghost Dog and Joy Ride :))

I think you have to be a fan of the genre.

Horror films are best enjoyed by those who like horror films. If you're not into that sort of movie, then you'll think it's just "okay". If you do love those sort of movies, then you'll think "wow, that was great". I've always liked movies like that, so I really enjoyed it :)

Were we watching the same film? 'Candy Cane'? 'Rusty Nail'? Steve Zahn's performance? The slow-mo walk to the hospital room?

One hell of a memorable flick I'd say.

And Juboy, let's not forget those two pygmies down the front of Venna's top that managed to remain alert throughout the entire movie

Funny. I don't really like horror movies (I did pick up Stir of echoes R1 for a fiver yesterday, though). But I really liked Joyride aka Raodkill. I loved that rusty nail mental guy.
    Never seen Duel b4, though.:)

Squirrel God, just been looking at your on order list, have you ever not had anything on order. Or do you have to have something on order at all times.

In all seriousness, I did have nothing on order for a couple of weeks in late November, if I remember correctly.

Then I started buying like mad because of Christmas - wanted loads to watch over the holidays :)

About 20 of what's on order is stuff that was out of stock when I ordered back then so I'm expecting a goldrush towards the end of January :D
