I have a 6x Toshiba DVD-ROM. I havent used it with my projector yet but on my 21" monitor I cant notice any problems with DVD playback no - but I see that 12x DVD drives are the recommended minumum for HCPC's - what am I missing?

Who said 12x speed drives are recommended for HCPCs? Complete rubbish.
The slower the better since faster drives are noisier. DVDs spin at single speed for playback anyway.
If you can find a single speed drive you'd be a lucky chap. Some people use software to slow their drives down.
