Does any member know of a particularly good place to buy DVDs in the Big Apple.
Is it best to stick to the main stores or is there somewhere to find a bargain.

craig, the bigger stores may have more selection, for example Virgin Megastores, but once you've bought the disk and added on the tax(which they don't show)it can be pricey. other cheaper stores to look out for include: Tower Records
    Sam Goody
Motion Picture Company (my fav, look out for the good offers)

    hope this is some help.

    Craig,

You could always goto Blowout Video opposite Virgin Megastore on Times Square.

They have a good selection and are often cheaper than Virgin for mainstream titles. Most important though they do 2nd hand at $30 for two which can be quite good.

Tower Records were pretty good when I was there in October last - big selection and reasonable prices

You are going to be sorely disappointed.

I went everywhere in New York looking for DVDs.

The bigger stores (Virgin) were more expensive than the UK.

J&R records are pretty good, but they are on the south tip of Manhatten (near the world trade centre).. But they still arn't that cheap.

I was told of a shop along the side of 'The Public Library'.. Stand at the front of the library and take the street which runs to the left of the library.. There is a large CD/DVD store there.. They are cheaper, but still not that good. (About £15 each).

One of these was MI-2.. However, I went to Heathrow again a week later and found it in Dixons Duty Free for £11...

If you leave Manhatten and go to Jersey, as far as I know you still pay sales tax, but its less (I think it was 7.5%, instead of NewYorks 8%).. We went to Jersy Gardens, which was a large 'mall'.. There were no DVD shops, but of the things that we did buy, we still got taxed.

What is sickening, is that my friend and his girlfriend was there at the same time, saying at her sisters (off Manhatten). They knew where to shop (because they live there) and went to a place called 'Costco' (Like a supermarket).. They picked up their DVDs for about £10.. But, as a tourist, you probably won't find one.

When we got home, we found that we had picked up a booklet of vouchers/tickets from the airport/hotel.. In there was a list of shops doing discounts.. One was for DVDs, but the shop was in Greenwich village.

Good luck... But I would say enjoy the sights/experience and forget about DVD shopping.

I visted NY last March and was also disappointed with the prices of DVD's.

I then went onto Florida and found very cheap DVD's in supermarkets such as Target and Wall-Mart.

eg. Spy Who Shagged Me, Twister, Deep Blue Sea, for about £12 each.
