Yesterday I took a day trip to Franced via "Le Shuttle" and found myself in "Carrefour Cite Europe" outside of Calais.

This shopping centre has everything so after loading up with the obligatory vino and spirits, I took a wander over to the DVD's.

This was pretty much like a virgin V shop, stocking most chart titles. The added bonus was the stock clearence that was going on. So after scanning titles and their respective packaging, I selected the following goodies. (You don't have to speak the lingo to determine if the discs have English dialogue and subtitles. It is fairly clear on most packaging).

The Fly & Fly 2 boxset: Identical to the region 1 release with all the same extra's. 249FF

Basic Instinct: Good anamorphic transfer, with making of documentary, photo album and filmographies. 149FF

Manhunter: No extra's, good print despite being non anamorphic. French dialogue or English with burned in French subtitles. Mega bargain price of 79FF

    Total expenditure 477FF

Now by my reckoning the average price of each disk was about £11.50. Not bad at all. I personally am not bothered by the fact that the packaging is in French and the titles may sometime be different for linguistic reasons.

I was toying with the idea of buying the French version of "True Lies". It was THX mastered and anamorphic with various extras. Couldn't confirm that it was uncut so I declined.More than likley it was intact. (The UK DVD version has been more heavily cut than the previous VHS version. For details checkout the melon farmers website).

Anyone else have pick up any bargains whilst travelling?

...you may take it as a general rule that (contrary to the Germans) the French do not, repeat not (bother to) 'cut' movies... ¨[very occasionally (but, really, only very)] they may 'ban' a film altogether...

...so the next time you cross the Channel for a shopping spree, know that the French 'True Lies' DVD is, indeed, not cut...

In my experience, most German DVDs are not cut either. They seem to be pretty liberal here. However what you do need to wathc for is the DD 5.1 tracks. Often it will only be in German, with English and maybe another language only in DD 2.0
