DVD Regions-USA/Europe

I have recently acquired a Panasonic portable DVD player -modelDVD-L50
This was bought by my son in New York 2/3 years ago.
Of course it will play only region 1 DVDs. Is there anything I can do about it?
(apart from going to live in the US!!)
