On a DVD recorder, like a VHS tape on a VCR, is it possible to record on a rw disc, say, a 1/2 hour programme, stop the recording then restart later recording say another seperate 1/2 hour programme on the same disc?

Yes, and delete and re-record as well - just like a VCR.

Most DVD recorders give you the option of 2, 4 and 6 hours of recording on a single DVD. Obviously the more time allowed, the more inferior the recording.
