You should be fine with either format.

The quality is broadcast quality and brilliant at that.

    Possibly.

    Single layered at the mo.

Why has my post jumped to the top?

There is no fight, all formats are viable and have a substantial user base somewhere in the world.

Pick the machine which suits your needs, I personally love time slip recording where you can pause programs and view the start before the end has finished recording, which is a panasonic feature at present . Other -ram machines in the future should also do this.

All media is single layer, one hour at best quality, 2 at reasonable.
Again the flexible recording mode on a panasonic will fit the recording exactly to the media, even if it is 2.5 or 4.5 hours whatever you want.

Can someone give me a brief explanation of DVD recorders and the formats?

I understand that there has been a fight between the rival manufacturers to push 1 format of DVD recording, as there is DVD R, DVD RW, DVD RAM etc etc.

Can someone explain if the quality is any good?

As I understand it, the recording has to be downconverted from digital, to analogue, then back up to digital again to be put on disk - is that correct?

Also, are the DVD's you buy dual or single layered?

Thanks for any info you can give me!

I'd also be interested to hear views on the sound and picture quality of DVD recorders compared to, say, the Toshiba 220/230 standard.
If they are as good it seems like the way forward is a recorder/player as one unit in the same way as a VCR.
    Any comments appreciated.

The latest issue of Home Cinema Choice has a roundup of all the DVD Recorders available. I'm not a great fan of HCC but this article seems 'ok'. Recommends you get the DVD recorder that's best for you. A brief summary of the ratings (for what they are worth) were as follows:

Panasonic DMRE50 - 5 stars (due to Flexible Record/Playback). Rated "Best Budget Deck"

    Panasonic DMRHS2 - 5 Stars
Rated as the most "flexible and powerful" DVD Recorder.

    Philips 1000 Mk II - 5 Stars
Rated best playback machine due to the PAL progressive output

    Sony GX7 - 4 Stars
Rated as a "beautifully made...[and high quality]" machine

    Philips 880/890 - 4 Stars
    Rated as "most affordable" deck.

    Pioneer DVR7000 - 3 Stars

I suggest you pick up a copy and have a read. Also do a search of these forums (button in the top right hand corner) and will find this is a topic that has been discussed once or twice :D

It does...but I don't think it is as good as the review as May 2003 of what video. What video not only get into reviews of the latest DVD rec out their but talk a bit on the formats - most informative.

PS. The HCC did a little piece on Kiss 550 -something I have been searching for some news!!!:)
