just acquired a dvd recorder to copy progs from sky+ box - whats the best way to hook it up - with the sky+ box between dvd and tv using its passthrough to watch dvds (ie 2 scarts from sky+ 1 to tv 1 to dvd) or with dvd in middle (ie 2 scarts from dvd - 1 to sky+ and 1 to tv) - thanks

Depends, (didn't you know that was coming). Does the DVDR pass through the RGB signal? My setup is :

Sky TV SCART => DVDR SCART in => TV AV1

and

Sky VCR SCART => TV AV2

Reasons are that minimum hassle for SWMBO. The DVDR controls the TV, autoswitching to the AV1. Can copy Sky+ to DVDR, and still watch terrestrial channels. Can offload DVDR HDD recording to DVD and watch Sky on AV2 albeit without RGB.

Downsides are that you lose the RGB if you're using the DVDR to do its thing. Biggest problem is the only way to get a recording out of the Sky+ is to play/copy it which ties up both boxes.
