I am Thinking of getting either a Panasonic DMR-HS2EBS
    or a Philips DVDR890.
Any opinions which to go for, has anyone got the above.
Are the DVD recorderble discs expensive.

If you can afford the ackers then the H2 is the way to go without any doubt what so ever. There is cheap media available some well under a £ but you need to experiment with different brands to see which works best for both recording and then playback on ordinary DVD players. A reliable brand like verbatim can be got for about £2-60 a dics. The more reliable cheap brands are about £1-10
