Reviews I've seen about the Sony RDR -GXD500 dvd recorder all say that the incorporation of a digital tuner improves the quality of the recording, but as there is no hard drive this high quality is limited to ca. 2hr - I assume the capacity of a blank dvd disc. It would make sense to me to make a dvd revorder with digital tuner and an reasonable sized hard drive. Does this exist and if not does anyone know of any plans to launch such a model?

No DVD/HDDs with Freeview yet. A few are expected later in the year. A solution could be a Pioneer 530/630 and a Freeview STB which works with the Pioneer G-link (Guide Plus) IR gadget. An STB dedicated to the recorder would be almost as good as an integrated machine, but does mean an extra box.

Have a look at the 530 thread http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=223651

Within two months there will be a fair amount of choice on the DVB/DVD/HDD combi front - Sony are releasing three models (710, 910 and 1010) and Panasonic are releasing the DMR-EH60D. Samsung may also have their model out by then as well.
