DVD Recorder with Freesat

Hey guys, I'm currently enjoying Freesat and had been debating whether to upgrade to the freesat pvr or buy a good quality DVD recorder. After looking at all the pros and cons I decided to go with a DVD recorder.

I was considering the Panasonic DMREX78 but have heard that there aren't any DVD recorders with an HDMI input. Is this true?

The reason I ask is I was hoping I could have plugged the Freesat box into the DVD recorder thus alloowing me to record on Freesat including BBC and ITV HD.

I know that I will be able to record Freeview as its got a built in tuner but wanted to know if there were any recorders that would allow me to record HD or would I need to go with Humax's pvr to record HD?

Cheers

there are no recorders in the uk with a hdmi input , no

the humax is a HD pvr and so will record in HD , but you wont be able to transfer to any other medium in HD at the moment , only SD

there are no HD dvd recorders in the uk so that is a no no

Thanks Ramjet, doesn't deter me from buying the DVD Recorder as I really can't justify the extra money for the Freesat pvr. I know I get to watch other channels while recording and pause tv but I can pause tv with the Panasonic recorder and I'll just watch on freesat or my TV's built in freeview while recording.

You could record from the TV ... but it is basically a joke concept because it would tie up your TV... and could only be in composite SD quality ... which makes a total mockery of HD.

There are no HD recorders yet.... and there are no guarantees ... but a Freesat HD recorder has the possibility of being the first HD recorder released in the UK... I say this only because at present it is the only type of HD recorder that would make any sense as there is no other platform available to support one until the Freeview HD rollout which will occur from late 2009 through to 2012.

You could buy something in the interim... or wait on the off chance that this might occur... but it is hard to have a clear crystal ball at the moment with so many economic uncertainties.

The only other HD routes available at the moment are 'closed platform' routes like cable or satellite.

Hi,

I'd just to add to what Gavtech said with a comment that none of the available HD-recorders (France and Australia) have HDMI inputs either. I presume that recorders with HDMI inputs will appear (for camcorders) but HDCP may not allow you to record material from other sources.

I think it will probably stay that way.
The whole point of HDMI was to prevent HD copying.

HD material can be copied from camcorder via a disc, an SD card, or DV input.
