Looks like my VCR could be on way out and I have lots of kids birthdays still on VCR which they like to look back on from time to time, Can anyone recommend a machine that will let me transfer from VHS to DVD but at same time still able to give a decent picture when watching either format.

JVC and Panasonic models tend to offer the best of both worlds - both of these are strong on the VCR side as well as the DVDR. The JVC DRMV1 is, marginally, the best for VCR to DVDR transfers. However a close second - and by far the better machine if you want to record from Freeview and/or Sky/Cable (due to RGB input) - would be the Panasonic DMR-ES30V.

You should also consider buying seperates - have a look at the 'Which DVD Recorder?' link in my signature for general DVD recorder buying advice.

The Panasonic looks good but it doesn't seem to be able to play back some of the formats such as JPEG?

No, the Panasonic won't touch JPEGs I'm afraid (or Windows Media). It will play all DVD formats including DVD-Audio, MP3, CD-DA and VideoCDs.

IIRC it's possible for some all-in-one DVD authoring programs such as Ulead DVDMF to make a DVD-compatible image slideshow. Haven't tried it myself but that might remove a limiting factor in your requirements.

...however, I don't know about the latest Panasonics, but the E85 certainly won't play SVCD's or non-standard VCD's. I'm transferring all my SVCD's to DVD. The resulting DVD seems to play OK, even with the original SVCD resolution of 480x576 which is non-standard for a DVD.

Raszcak, do you happen to know whether the EH60 will play SVCD's?

Afraid not - only standard VCDs.
